+2 soooooo much more fun stuff to spend the money on than NAV that will actually add something more interesting to the car.

Especially when you can get a portable one that can do everything the built in one does for less than $500. (My Garmin Nuvi 350 lists for $350 but can be had on Walmart.com for less than $240 and it was #4 in Consumer Reports tests and was recommended.)

No car needs a factory nav system. Portable aftermarket systems do everything factory units can do for a small fraction of the price with tons of other benefits too.

Same, I don't need it. It should be optional, but definitely not standard as people want to save monies.

HUD?

I was thinking a HUD-NAV option would be pretty neat. You can get the pontiac/'vettes with HUD now for speed, and there was a caddie (DTS?) that offered night vision HUD... so why not a NAV-HUD nothing complex, just turn here, 1.2km to turn etc, etc...

What could be *really* cool would be a BMW iDrive like wheel in the console to control the HUD-NAV options (find hotel/gas/etc)... that would be very neat-o!

Guys keep in mind this is not a BMW or a Cadillac...don't get your hopes set to the wrong price bracket.

Actually, with what the car companies charge for a plain-jane CD player, I think that having a jack to plug in an MP3 player would be the "simplest" option. Delete the CD player and save $400-$600 off the sticker ($19.99 in parts cost to GM).

Amen..drop 2,000 into audio, exhaust or hell..if you need it $200 mid level hand held that will get the job done.

I will be very disapointed if Nav is not an option. I could live with just the onstar feature, but really want the screen with the map.

HUD-NAV

The idea that I'm thinking of doesn't exist to the best of my knowledge -but it would be awesome. Take the turn by turn arrows that GM is starting to use, but instead of having them show on the instrument pannel, display it on a HUD. The hardware and software cost increase is minimal for a car already designed for a HUD, which by itself does add a bit of cost.

What you're thinking of isn't a nav screen. OnStar uses the little screen inbetween the gauges. Road & Track explains everything here:

Quote:
In a surprising tech twist, the Pontiac G8 GT's navigation system has become my favorite OEM model in the automotive kingdom — especially amazing as the car doesn't have a nav system...in the traditional sense, anyway.

Hit the OnStar button on the rearview mirror, an operator comes on loud and clear and asks if you need driving directions. Tell him where you'd like to go, and the driving directions get down-loaded to the car, with left/right/straight arrows and distance appearing on the small information center screen between the tachometer and speedometer, accompanied by equally clear audible directions. Plus side: Hands-free driving directions on the trot (no need to pull over and stop to access a touch screen); no time wasted fiddling with various levels on the navigation menus; savings of $2000-plus by not having to purchase a navigation system and/or an even more expensive luxury package. Minus: You must purchase the OnStar "Directions & Connections" subscription plan for $28.90/month or $299 annually (but $299 times several years is still less than $2000, isn't it?). Note to GM: Please try to incorporate this OnStar navigation with gauge cluster display in as many vehicles as possible.
Sounds good to me given the fact that i dont really know the prices of others to compare to.
