"Captive Test Fleet". GM-owned test vehicles. Must have been a bunch o' fun to have been able to drive a ZL1 at such an early stage.

Because they will be able to buy them for 20-30k cheaper than the gen 6 zl1...

And I've got a $20 bet that says after 5-10 years from now the 5th Gen ZL1 will hold up to the beating at the track and drag races much better due to the heavier chassis and driveline.

IMHO.

There were 1,971 ZL1's produced for the initial 2012 model year (99 were officially allocated for Canada).
Total Show Cars & Test CTF ZL1's: 69 | Grand Total Built = 1,971
Description RPO Code Count
ZL1 with Clear Carbon Fiber Hood insert B92 1,548
ZL1 with DSW Stripe - (memo to B92) DSW 241
ZL1 with Black Carbon Fiber Insert -B92 423
ZL1 with DSX Stripe - (memo to -B92) DSX 96
ZL1 with Manual Transmission MG9 1,300
ZL1 with Automatic Transmission MYD 671
ZL1 with Optional Polished Wheel RTQ 1,058
ZL1 with Base Black Wheel RSK 913

There were also CTF ZL1's built this year as test models. Some of them will be re-sold to dealers and had different VINS then a production 2012 ZL1. The CTF VINS started with C9799XXX. ZL1 registry has just received the correct counts for the 2012 CTF ZL1's. The breakdown of these rare cars is:

8 ZL1's were strictly marketing cars
45 ZL1's were assigned as actual CTF test fleet
Total number of the C9799XXX vin built for 2012 model year: 69
These preproduction ZL1's are very rare and will be collectors in the coming years. Our take here at the *********** is, if you find one buy it!

I would agree with the registry that the first 69 to match the original 69 with the special and distinct VINs could have some extra value and a significant place in the history of the ZL1s.

I found a CTF car for sale. Is it really worth it to buy it? It has 18k miles on it.

If you're looking to buy a ZL1 then go buy that one. Is the one you're looking at Inferno Orange?, if so I think it's a steal at that price. It's been for sale for three weeks or more.

Unless it's the first or last it means nothing. Mileage and options and to a lesser extent color determine value. These cars will be more valuable then the SS cars and other 5th gen cars but that's about it. And for the deals to be had now for new ones value drops even more. I paid 44,200 for a brand new 15 with a msrp of 62,000. And I'm sure the dealer and manufacturer still made a good profit. The only thing I "bought" was the fact I'll take less of a hit if I ever decide to sell it. Bottom line, never buy a new car or slightly used one as an investment. More times then not its a money looser. Buy it to enjoy!

I do believe these cars will be worth something 20 or 30 years down the line. Obviously condition, mileage, documentation will be the majority of the value. There is a high probability a lot will be run hard, totaled, modified beyond belief. I will be willing to bet finding a good example of a 5th gen zl1 that far in the future will be harder than you think and values for these cars will go up.

That's the one I spotted. It looked a little worn from the pictures.

They got a red 2012 listed for 42,000. With 2K on it. Now that's some low miles

VnK, I've read a lot of your posts and and agree with most.
This one, not so much.
I don't believe that historically, over a lot of years, that having to be the first or last produced are the only significant cars.

Any one of the original 1969 ZL1s, regardless of production number, would be very valuable today.
I also believe that any one of the original 1967, 1968 or 1969 Z/28 Camaros would be considered both valuable and collectible, again regardless of production number.

I love 2nd Gens too, and they made more 1970 Z28s that they did 2013 ZL1's, my model year, if my old memory is correct, and I think that most of us as Camaro people would like to have one, and would consider them desirable regardless of production number...

I think that as the years go by, and being of an age that will never see this day, I do believe that in time, our ZL1's, irrespective of model year, will become both collectible and valuable because of what they are.

Offering my perspective respecting production number v vehicle v time.
