The thing is.... GM contracts other companies to do their infotainment and mylink. In this case, I believe it's Panasonic.

A lot of times, vendor likes to take hostage of a certain product from the parent company (GM) so that they would renew their contract for services provided.

As much as GM wants to do something about it, they can't.
However, there is a developer network that you can join.
You can easily create your own map app that uses Google/Bing/Here.

I'm awaiting for registration approval so I can create my own map app with HERE

I've got a 15 Camaro with Nav and just got my first letter telling me there is a update (Dated August 1, 2016).

Just wondering if anyone had done this update yet ?

I'm not opposed to it, but I am not having the least bit of problems with it and I don't want to mess up something not broken.

I like how it posts the speed on the map (small sign and on the top right)......My 16 Silverado doesn't do this, it shows it between the gauges.

I didn't want to do the update and find out it moves or changes that ?

I looked through past posts here and these look to be only the maps and none of the interface....just confirming that....if anyone can.

"map updates" are just that - maps. Ongoing development throughout parts of the country, especially near populated cities, make these maps obsolete. If your dealer or GM is offering free updates for a few years, take them. If you aren't having any issues with where you drive, there is an argument that the update is not worth paying for.

Thanks for confirming that.

I agree with you, I probably won't get it, but it's good to know if I decide to it won't change anything but the maps

$160 ($140 if you buy before October) seems a bit steep, yes? Not sure I am going to do it.

Map-NAV Update letter

Got one today from Chevrolet.....says the standard price for an update is 159.99, however with this special offer, it's 20 bucks off with free shipping.

Sounds kinda pricey to me.

Anybody else get one?

Lincoln wanted $280 IIRC for a map update.

Since you can get an nav unit with lifetime maps and traffic for $99 you KNOW they are REAMING you.

Pisses me off because you'd think they (GM) could throw owners a bone now and then. Maybe foster a little good will? At least make it REASONABLE, like $25 or something.

I got the letter. To me, with free Tom-Tom upgrades not to mention iPhone maps, the Camaro nav is virtually worthless. It's the one option I'm sorry I ordered. To ask me to spend another $140 on it is an insult.
