Get the manual tranny. My wife had never driven a stick when we bought the Camaro. Took her a week to be competant around town, and 1 month before she went on a 1200mile road trip by herself. Manual isnt hard to learn, just be sure not to over-think it.
Stalling the car a few dozen times wont cause any real damage, just dont panic and do something really stupid like downshifting to 1st at 80mph...

I got my '91 Camaro (manual) knowing HOW to drive a stick, but never having had more than an hour or two of practice in my life. It's amazing how fast you learn when you drive it every day. Within a day or two you'll stop having to think about it all the time. I'd get the manual if that's what you want.
