It would be a bummer to assume the cap came off and caused the damage and fixing the hood to have it happen again. So it's worthy of a thorough inspection I'm my opinion.

I have a 2015 SS with the same issue. Small little circle ding right above the strut cover. Mine is on drivers side. Makes me wonder if the same has happened to me the ding just appeared with no explanation. My paint is not cracked just the small circle indention

Did anyone check the nut for tightness under the cap? The plot thickens...

Apparently, it's not isolated to Camaros. Here's a two year old post on a Volvo forum!

I'll be curious as to what you find out. Inquiring hoods want to know!

OP - With the plastic cap out of place and tilted as shown in the photo which recreated how you found it, what additional height does that add? Is it about 1/2" taller?
The top of the Camaro strut is floating design that includes bumper/insulators. The whole top of the strut tilts as the steering wheel is turned lock to lock. Noticed when I first bought my car new, the strut retainer washer/hat was almost touching the strut tower. Now there is a noticeable gap between the washer/hat and the top of the strut tower. This leads me to believe the insulators are compressing/wearing over time. Looks like the one on your Camaro is doing the same from pictures you posted, is that the case? Ron

one of the strangest things I've ever seen. it's really odd how the paint cracked.
hopefully dealer fixes... it's obviously not your fault |

I think the paint cracked from the top of the strut rotating with the cap half off. The crooked cap turned with the top of the strut and that pushed against the underside of the hood as it turned cracking the paint and slightly denting the hood.
What concerns me more is the ultra tight clearance in that area. Obviously, it seems to be a very tight fit where the hood is located above the strut towers. The hood actually has huge cutouts on the underside panel. I wonder if this is a design problem from using a sleeker, lower profile hoodline on the existing Zeta chassis? |
