If anything, I'd guess that they are looking to come out with yet another model of the Camaro, after all they've already released the usual LT's, SS's, RS's, ZL1's, 1LE's, Z/28's, etc, but they still have another few years of the 6th gen to go. What can they come out with now to add to the Camaro lineup and breathe some more interest in the lineup?

What they're probably trying to do is find a name for the new lower-cost V8 package that they're dropping this year. In 4th gen the strippers were the Z28's. But the 5th gen they didn't have strippers and the Z28 where super expensive cars

The mild refresh for 2019 should be interesting. I predict no grille and an even larger bass mouth opening in front. Again Chevy missed the boat on eliminating the ill tapered back window treatment (spy shots).

Camaro has lost it's way, just like Ford did with the Mustang in 2010.

What about a stock T/A option and going back to the 5th gen styling?

The Z28's weren't the stripper models per say. My 2000 SS is a stripper model: Hardtop with an A4, cloth interior and no rear defogger.
It mainly came down to the options. Just because the WU8 RPO code is on the door for an SS didn't mean it came with a multitude of options. It just came with different emblems, different hood and spoiler and that was it.

Yep got it, went through it, and commented at the end that they're asking the wronq questions about Camaro naming conventions completely

Panther, of course. The original name of the car until political correctness and Ralph Nader got involved and GM backed out and chose some made up name with a C to match other car names in their line up. There are a couple rare '67 Panthers in existence. I know SLP did their own version of the Panther. Maybe Chevrolet can do a Camaro "Panther" model themselves. Never liked the Camaro name. Debadged mine.

I'm thinking it'll stay a camaro but they have a new setup to compete with the demon. Unfortunately, Hennessey already took the name "the exorcist".

a stripper model v-8 might sell pretty good if priced in RS territory.

It came with different wheels too. They were larger in diameter and also wider. Even though your SS is a low option car, it was still a step above the regular Z28 back in 2000.

I'm sorry but I don't believe it for a minute. Any company with marketing brains would know that renaming something as old and as heralded as the Camaro would surely doom the product. Chevrolet might as well discontinue Camaro and start with a new model. The model would probably fail even with this scenario.
