First snowfall and I am done for the Winter till the salt clears on the road. It was 50 degrees today and beautiful and I took my car out for a cruise. I am dreading the first snowfall because I know that means my car will be garaged for awhile.

LOL, I can picture a lot of skidding side to side. This car is not meant for the snow.

I don't see any issues with driving in the snow, and would be more concerned with the ice storms that hit .....

After speaking to Al Oppenheiser, GM Chief Engineer at SEMA. He has been driving his Camaro since January around Michigan. He wants people to drive this car in the winter. It was extensively tested for winter driving in Norway,
long before it was released to be sold. This car was designed for winter and summer driving. Just need a tire change and you're good to go. Remember, it's not about how much power the car has, it's how smooth you are on the gas and brakes. Winter driving is when you find out who the REAL drivers are, not just the ones who know how to mash the gas or the brakes.

I have been driving in the snow for many years. I have mostly had rear wheel drive cars. I am on Camaro number 4. 1987 V-8 Sport coupe, 1998 Z-28, 2002 SS and my 2010 SS.
The wider the tire the less snow traction, they do not bite into the snow. Narrow is better. The other problem is shedding. If the tire does not shed the snow and gets packed into the tread, you are going no where. The locking differential does not give you traction, it only makes both wheels spin. The traction control doesn,t work in the snow, it only stops the tires from spinning, it does not give you any more traction. Couple the wide tires with a high output engine and you have a problem. The scariest thing that happened to me was being stopped on a steep hill outside of Boston and having one of my Camaros start sliding down the hill on it's own backwards. I was stopped with the brakes on when this happened. I will not be driving my 2010 SS on snowy days, I bought a winter machine for that a 2001 Buick. If you must drive in the snow, get real snow tires for all 4 wheels. If you just get the rears, you will find out like I did with my 87 that the car will now go but will not steer. I expect a lot of people will start disagreeing with me but, I actually have driven 3 of my 4 Camaros through every snow storm since I bought my 87. These were my winter machines because 8 months of the year I am usually on my Harley.

I bought my Camaro on the worst snow storm in Colorado's history for October. I drove it all the way home, 1.5hrs in a massive blizzard. Here is what I observed.

1. When in heavy snow storm you can't see crap with RS package. Those halo lights turn off the fog lights at night. LAME. Very hard to see the road.

2. Even with PZERO tires all the way home the camaro held to the street like a champ. I did not lose traction or control once. VERY SURPRISED. The traction control in these new cars throws out everything you ever knew about rear wheel drive cars.

I did on my 2002 SS. BF Goddrich G-force all seasons, verdict; they sucked, they were worse than the Eagle F1's that came on the car new.
Next up, Toyo Proxis, verdict; they sucked. I had the optional Acceleration Slip Regulation ( traction control) too. Get real winter tires or pay the price with white knuckle driving. There is nothing like being in Boston traffic at a light at the foot of a hill and not being able to get traction and having every A-hole behind you honking their horns. Maybe our gen 5's are better, please let me know. I will not be finding out for my self because I bought a 2001 Buick as a winter rig.

V-8 or six? All of mine have been V-8's and the sixes would go rolling by when I was stuck in the snow.

Agreed. The hills are what kills. I have seen too many people slide backwards or off the road.

My solution for winter driving:

4 summer tires at 50 degrees and below (with or without snow) - not good :( (similar to driving on hockey pucks)

4 all season tires at 50 degrees and below (with or without snow) - better

4 winter tires at 50 degrees and below (with or without snow) - best

The rubber on the tires should stay soft in the cold, and winter tires have this quality....others not so much.

Be safe!!

I excited about my new snowblower, but my Camaro won't be leaving the garage until next spring, once the white stuff starts falling.

I'm not worried about how the Camaro will do in the snow, I think it'll do just as good, if not better than, my 07 Focus did last year (it had summer tires on all winter too). What worries me are the OTHER idiots on the road. I went and bought a truck with four-wheel drive, will be using it on any not so optimal weather days.
