They are not needed and are nothing more than a "makes ya feel all warm and fuzzy" inside item.

Mostly not needed, as the engine oil is 100% filtered before heading to the bearings and the rest of the pressurized side of the oil system...

But the unpressurized side, is not fine filtered, only by the pickup screen.

So, the magnet helps keep tiny metallic bits out of the pump, and more importantly the pressure relief valve (both pre filter) . You don't want that bugger sticking. Mine all get a magnet plug on day 1.

I let my oil filter remove all that junk. Anything left over from machining the block and heads won't stick to a magnetbecause it is ALUMINUM.

Where do some people come up with this stuff? Aluminum bits in the engine isn't the worry. It's iron/steel wear particles over time. Magnetic plugs cannot hurt. That little crud on the magnet stays out of your pump and filter, so that's less wear and gook clogging up the system. Plus you see it EVERY time you change oil. GM used to put them in all automatic transmission oil pans as well.

LS1 engines had them in previous Camaros. Unfortunately, saving a buck was more in the General's interest. You can get a mag plug from any earlier LS1 engine that has one and it'll fit.

I went and got some new GM ones for the truck and the 5th gen from an LS1 application. Dirt cheap, and no more of a problem to swap out than switching plugs.

Anyone's Plug Leaking?

I just changed my oil last week when I installed my intake. I only drove it long enough to verify that it was still running after my install. Since then, it has been on my left as I have been installing headers and cat-back. While under the car, I notice oil under the plug. I tightened it to 18 ft-lbs originally. After seeing this, I bumped it to 20. Has anyone else had this problem?

I have had one on since day one, and I am at 45,000 miles, no leaks and that's with 7 oil changes . It does pick up alittle bit of stuff every oil change. Our Differential plugs have stock magnets on them, GM must see a benefit there.
