i have $250 in my equinox conversion, lost 3-4mpg but with e85 being a $1 a gal.cheaper than regular fuel it is worth it and it is running great.

but it has a knock sensor to tell when the fuel is lower octane so it knows to retard the timing so it wont damage the engine. so you can run any fuel you want in it (minus diesel unless your feeling lucky)
the knock sensor doesnt tell when fuel is lower octane. it detects knock. nothing more, nothing less. it will not tell you the cause of the knock, it will just start pulling timing till the knock is gone. and the knock sensor doesnt just pick up detonation knock, if your headers are loose or rubbing, you can sometimes get a "false knock"

why waste the money on the octane booster? they really dont do all that much. they claim anywhere from 1-10 pts (or more) of boost for the octane, however they neglect to tell you that those points go towards the RON, before they average the RON and the MON.

so putting in a bottle of booster that will add "3 points" will net you maybe 1.5 maybe.

take a look at this comparison of octane boosters and tell me which is worth more to you? a 12 oz bottle that might raise you 1.5 points, or a gallon of premium?

its a back and forth battle. you are spending a dollar less but having to fill up more often....
