Seeing that a aftermarket exhaust picks up little to nothing over the stock system, it aint all that restrictive.

I think that is true with stock Cats, but I believe people are seeing more improvement of after-market cat-backs vs stock if you have higher flow cats on the car already.

In any case, it probably is extra weight, and it also gets quite hot (hot enough to melt exhaust hangars if they get too close)..

From what I have heard from several speed shops all the power comes from the LT's and Hi-Flo cats. The factory cat back is supposed to handle 600 plus HP ....replacing with an aftermarket cat back system offers no noticeable HP gains but does offer different sound characteristics.

I've never seen a cross section. I've heard it's just an expansion chamber with no packing.

Someone needs to dissect one and set the record straight with pics.

I have a 2010 L99 w 38k miles. I've installed a K&N CAIK, JBA Cat delete pipes, and a tune. After about 6k miles I've developed a rattling noise coming from the rear section of the resonator. Looking to install an X-pipe cross over system. The cheapest I've found is from BBK for $279.00. Any thoughts/suggestions??? Thanks.

You can get an xpipe made at a local independent muffler shop for like 100-150.

This looks like a good route to go. I am very disappointed with the lack of growl from my OEM exhaust.

this is what I worry about. Im running Long tubes with cat-less mids and I really enjoy the tone. Loud at wide open but quiet on the highway. I wonder if there would be any increase in drone with the resonator removed.

My resonator developed a rattle earlier this year. I ditched the whole OEM exhaust for Stainless Works Retro Chambered. That huge resonator is there for the AFM drone.
