I got pulled over years ago for a 'speed contest' The cop didn't have a radar out but obviously know me and the celica I was with were going over the posted 35mph. He pulled me over and since he couldn't prove a speed he ticketed me for my window tint instead. I had 5% on the back window and 2 coats of 5% tint on the side windows. I know....just asking for a ticket with that degree of tint and it probably wasn't safe to drive in cloudy weather or night for that matter. Had to have the tint removed and taken to the state police for verification the car was legal again. Since then I have gone with 20%. Dark enough and doesn't attract quite as much attention. Haven't got the camaro tinted yet.. debating on staying legal at 35% or going with the 20%???

My state legal limit is 35% as well, so I decided to stay legal with my Camaro. I was skeptical when I dropped it off hoping it was going to be dark enough, and I was pleasantly surprised when I picked it up. I have 20% on my Yukon, and I swear I can't tell the difference between the two when I'm inside. I'm sure it's because of the window size, number of windows, etc. but 35% is just fine on the Camaro. And this way, you don't have to worry about getting a ticket and having it removed which isn't free either.

Unlike many laws this particular one makes sense. As another poster mentioned, if a cop walks up to a car and the windows are completely blacked out it puts the officer in a dangerous position. However, it sucks because 5% tint looks awesome!

Can some of you guys post up pics so we can see the difference between the tints? I want tinting but don't know what degree to go with. I want to stay as close to legal but get a blacked out look at the same time! Anyone know what the law is for New York State?

5%? Jesus. I wonder how long it takes people with that much tint to back into a parking space.

Not long when you have a backup camera I have 5% love the look and havent been bothered by cops, on a side note if you keep getting pulled over. Go to your eye doctor say your eyes are sensitive to light he will give you a tint exemption that the DMV signs keep it in your car. Problem solved.

So how exactly did the cop pull you over? Like did you have your windows rolled up when he approached you or something?

I've gotten pulled over, for something else, twice. 1st officer asked me to roll up my window because he thought the tint was a little dark - no ticket, but he said with this car, someone down the line is sure to give you a ticket for the tint - he was a very cool cop.

2nd officer, said nothing - pulled me over for 10 over the limit and no front plate. Got a ticket for the missing front LP only. Nothing about the tint.

On both occasions, I opened the sunroof shade and rolled both windows down before I stopped the car. Now, I have 35% (I think) on the back 3 windows, and 65% on the front two. Looks plenty dark enough for me

Ouch is all I can say for you though ;(
