I'm not saying your wrong but I believe that your infomation might be mistaken. Information from wikipedia says that hemispehrical heads have been around much longer than 1949.

"A Hemi engine (from hemisphere) is an internal-combustion engine in which the combustion chambers are of hemispherical form. Chrysler Corporation has registered "HEMI" as a trademark in the United States[1], though they were neither the hemi engine's inventors nor the first to commercialize hemi engines."

"Hemispherical cylinder heads have been used since at least 1903; they were used by the Belgian car maker Pipe in 1905[5]], the Peugeot Grand prix Car of 1912, the Alfa Romeo GP car of 1914, Daimler, and Riley. Stutz built four valve engines, conceptually anticipating modern car engines. The BMW double push rod design, taken over by Bristol Cars, the Peugeot 403 and the Toyota T engine are other well known hemi engines"

With his reputation of always having the fastest car at a NASCAR race but taking three days to get it legal enough to pass a NASCAR tech inspection, the SCCA inspectors tore his Z/28 apart, after dropping the gas tank off the car and on the ground (with the gas line now disconnected), the SCCA inspector told him that they had found seven violations that would keep them from allowing his car to race. Smokey promptly replied "Better make that eight!", started the car and drove off leaving the gas tank at the inspectors feet.

Lol, how did he drive off?

Hi, I'm new to group, but avid muscle car fan and hope to one day own a 2SS Camaro in the near future.

I remember reading or seeing something on this. Found this site at work. Customer Response Rep for Insurance Company and can't log in at work. Wildpaws you're absolutely right on the hidden gas tank. I believe from what I read or saw on tv sometime was either in the fire extinguisher or the tubing in the roll cage. Crafty was Smokey.
