Also, if the logic of that study is followed, then no one would ever change their oil and common sense tells me that just isn't smart.

I just know my oil did looked dirty when it was changed at 1000 mi. I will probably wait for 3k to 5k miles to do the next one.

Cool, and I am not an expert either, however the results of the study were interesting. They did do analysis of the oil at different intervals, i.e. 3000 miles, 6000 miles, 10,000, etc... and the results led to the statement... I guess the question is do we really trust "technology" or are we going by what we have been taught traditionally? My oil at 3k doesn't appear dirty at all, though looks can be deceiving... just food for thought... thanks for responding to my question...

Ignored them in my other cars. I think some of them just go by mileage. I don know how this one specifically works.

I went by the owners manual and computor. The car was made with close tollerances and uses Mobil one.

I will change mine at 3000 miles and then use the oil monitor to let me know when to change it again. Changing it any more than that is a waste of time and money. You are 100% under warranty following the recommendation from your manual. The new oil monitoring system uses your driving habits and rpms to determine when it is necessary to change your oil. Now if you live in a very dusty dirty area than by all means change it more often. But in normal driving commutes and city driving you can rely on the monitor.

again from GM:
Quote:
The GM Oil Life System is a computer based software algorithm that determines when to change oil based on engine operating conditions. There is no actual oil condition sensor. Rather, the computer continuously monitors engine-operating conditions to determine when to change oil.

How many miles can a vehicle go between oil changes when using this system?
The system allows GM customers to take advantage of the great strides that have been made in engine design and lubrication technology over the years. Depending on the vehicle/engine combination, driving conditions and driver habits, OLS equipped vehicles may extend oil change intervals significantly compared to the traditional 3,000 mile recommendation. However, based on driving conditions and type of vehicle the interval can vary. For instance, mild highway driving in a warm climate will maximize the interval between oil changes. Depending on the vehicle this could be in excess of 12,000 miles. On the other hand, short trip driving in a cold climate may limit the oil change interval to 3,000 miles or less.
http://www.gm.com/corporate/responsi..._qa_040104.jsp

It seems that they (GM) trust the system given that they have a 100k warranty covering engine/powertrain.... would you say that you are one who leans towards not trusting newer technology?

None of the above, I changed my own oil at 10% (11,000k miles) left on the oil life monitor.

I believe in getting rid of any metal shavings when a motor is breaking in. This was probably overkill but to me it was a cheap piece of mind.

Changed all my self:
Oil at 500 miles
Oil at 1,500 miles
Trans and Rear End oil to synthetic at 1,500

Next one will be around 7,500 - 8,000
