I use royal purple. I drag every friday, usually about 3 runs. I change the oil every 3k miles. And everything works fine. Btw the car is over 15 years old so obviously it works.

If you use synthetics go a little heavier on the oil weight, especially if its gonna be ran hard. As for maintenance it can vary from car to car, but it if its light to medium brown and doesn't smell burnt it's most likely good. Look out for oil leaking into the coolant because when you turn the engine off coolant might leak into the engine. Investing in a reusable oil filter might be a good idea, the paper ones shed into the system sometimes.
Check fluid levels and don't top off brake fluid unless it's low. Brake fluid levels drop when the pads wear and mechanics often forget to siphon out some fluid when they do brakes, brake fluid is very bad on paint. Preferably top off coolant with distilled water, maybe even provide distilled water for servicing cause the best I've ever seen is filtered water used in a service. When coolant has a sweet smell its good, same for ATF. ATF should be ruby red unless its colored differently. Limited slip diffs need a servicing every once in awhile and the first might want to be early, might as well do the trans at the same time. It comes down to if it looks good, feels good, and smells good it's probably good, the exception is diff fluid it just smells like A$$. I like to use heavier weight oil on high mileage engines too and it's okay to have a small leak, but if there is a lot coming out you should probably fix it. |

A clean 30 yr old car is, more often than not, low mileage, well maintaned, garage kept preferrably temp. controlled, rarely or never driven in the rain.

Amsoil is by far the best oil. Nothing else compares.
Mobil 1 is OK even though it's technically not really even a full synthetic. German Castrol (European Formula) is better. |

I run Pennzoil Platinum and a K&N oil filter on the LS1 every 5-6k. 142k and burns no oil.. And no oil pressure problems.

When I was living in Italy for professional reason, I used to own a Honda S2000 that was consuming quite a bit of oil.... mind you the boiler was turning at 9k rpm max... turns out it was quite normal for this particular engine, but lubrication was kind of a big discussion subject.
One day talking about this with my trusted mechanic : "wellllllllll, you see oil change is like taking a shower..... you sure would live more or less as long taking a shower once or twice a week ..... but how good does it feel to keep clean a little more often than that ? And who know what kind of strange stuff would accumulate on your skin.... Well you see, it's pretty much the same for your engine.... " Since then whatever the recommendation I do oil and filter change every 3 to 4K. Never had any problem whatever the car I had . That 2l 9k revving engine lasted for pretty much 130k miles without ever missing a beat and that's cause I sold it... and believe me I didn't got that nickname for no reason. this mechanic did fund the right words to put it in perspective ![]() Heavy-

I am getting away from mobile one after the last batch of independent testing they were at the bottom. I am running royal purple now and have had great results. I have the ability to get my oil tested at work so I am interested in seeing the results over the summer. I can get it fairly decently priced here locally so if things look good I will stick with it.
There is a lot more to oil than just viscosity. Royal purple has the highest film strength of any oil on the market. In this area mineral oils generally surpass synthetics. This is what actually prevents metal to metal contact and damage to bearing surfaces. We use a lot of oil from various brands at work and we are about to start some pilots with RP. If it works out we'll be buying about 100k gallons a year so I should have plenty of test data soon! On a side not about the BMW oil. If that's for the transmission that's normal for most manufacturers now. GM and ford are sealing their auto tranny's for life. |

I run Mobil 1 in all three of my cars. I change the oil and filter every 3K or one year (whichever comes first) in my camaro, and I change it every 5K for my daily drivers.
GM says a trans fluid replacement isn't neccessary on manual transmissions in my 4th gen camaro, but in 47K miles I've replaced it twice. Once was for convienience because the trans was out for a clutch replacement anyway. The daily drivers are automatics and get changed about every 30K miles. Rear end fluid has been changed a few times in the camaro, but usually because I had to open it up for a gear or diff change. I wouldn't go more than 20K before changing it. The way I look at it, changing fluids at lower intervals is piece of mind and insurance. |
