Problem is Japan and other countries are getting around that by building there cars here. And if you start to tariff foriegn made autoparts then you will hurt the big 3 also.

Get rid of the UAW is the solution to me.

^^^ Cant get rid of the unions, although that would be the best solution, and the foreign auto makers only get by making cars here because they only recently began doing so, these union contracts date back a long time...

...and im not following how taxing foreign made auto parts would hurt the domestic products...the point of NAFTA is to counteract any potential issues

Now im not saying GM should file for bankruptcy I'm just saying when people hear bankruptcy they freak and think its horrible...just my 0.02
Absolutly right.

Absolutely can if they go Chapter 11. Union contracts can be voided in bankruptcy, and as much as I originally supported the bailout, after seeing all the facts this is what I believe has to happen. Otehrwise GM will never be profitable again and we will be having this arguement all over again in a year.

^^ i agree completely about the union contracts in bankruptcy, but the basis of my argument is that they cannot afford to go into bankruptcy because when people hear that they will not want to buy a car from a bankrupt company under the impression they will not recieve a warranty if the company goes under...

Exactly. Chapter 11 only works for GM if customers stay loyal...which they won't considering all the other car options that are out there. Quite a pickle they're in.

Look at the products this management team (and those at Ford and Chrysler) have developed and are in the pipeline. If we let them die now we will never get to see the resurgence of the auto industry in this country. When the market demanded trucks and suv's, the big three made some of the best and most desireable trucks in the world. Now the market is changing, give them a chance to do the same with cars.
Ever heard of video conferencing?? Muuuuch cheaper than flying your personal jet all over the country. And how much do those exec's get paid anyway? I'd personally like to see all of them making no more than 100,000 a year until they can fix their companies. If their workers have to suffer, they had better be suffering right along with them. Though honestly I would have died laughing if one of the exec's had asked how many senators and representatives had their own jets
