For those want in dash nav: Garmin portables are being redesigned to fit into Jeeps today. The Jeep radio supplier basically receives a nav sub-assembly from Garmin and makes it part of the radio before that whole component goes off to the body and assembly plant to be installed in the car.
GM can do the same if they wish, without it taking up any more space than the current radio does. Its just a matter of business...quotation, sourcing, development, and finally product launch. Maybe we'll see it in 2013, maybe later. But 2012 only marks a 3yr mark for the radio they launched the Camaro with, and that is pretty much as short a lifecycle you see for any component that doesn't have some catastrophic quality issue forcing a quicker change. There is nothing wrong with todays Radio, and nav is a feature of Onstar, if you are willing to pay the monthly charge. In 2013 you'll see some neat connectivity radio options from GM...not sure if Camaro will get them. If you search you can find press releases. As for Apple and GM...there are already agreements in place, that's how you can do iPod control through the steering wheel (Apple has to allow that through licensing of technology to GM suppliers). But 'partnerships' are not really anything that Apple needs to do. This is different from Ford and Microsoft, who really needed each other to launch Sync and MyFordTouch. All carmakers need to include Apple due to the relative size of the markets they command. When it comes to convenience features, Consumer acceptance drives automotive innovation. For safety and economy its a different story, but for convenience its all driven by the consumer market acceptance of new tech. |

For me the car is a release mechanism to help me unwind and enjoy my time away from work and home. Whether it is listening to the roar of the exhaust coming onto an expressway ramp or just cruisin with some mellow jazz. I do not really want to play with or depend on some computer wizardry to keep me occupied while I am driving. As far as the built in nav systems, on average they cost $2,000. I do have a portable nav system that I use for long trips but definitely not something I would use on a daily basis. I would rather put the money towards a sunroof to help me enjoy my ride. Just an old farts opinion.

I know the opinion I've heard from the guys at GM -- at least about the new power passenger seat is that they won't put it in for you due to inability to prove it on that MY car... They're legally not allowed to since they didn't test it on that specific one.. I don't know for sure, but I would assume that would apply to a steering wheel that has a safety system in it -- ??
We had a couple people ask about having a dealer putting the new seats in a 2010 at the CAS -- that was the response. |
