Im having the same 1st-2nd grind issues. Got my 2011 2SS LS3 august 2010 and noticed the grind almost right away. Its not grinding constantly and at first chalked it up to be caused by me. As it continued to happen and I knew the clutch was to the floor, I realized there was a problem.
For me it happens wether the trannys cold or well warmed up, its happened at low speeds as well as near redline. It's also difficult to shift into 2nd gear at times and it takes force to get it in gear. The problem is how intermittently it happens. It doesnt happen all the time, I'd say its grinded maybe 20 times since I've owned it. With that being said, I took it in to the dealer for the first time back in October, it was there for 3 days a few people drove it and said they couldn't duplicate the problem. They told me to refuel it if I wanted them to keep testing or come pick it up. I picked it up and they set up an appointment to go for a test ride with the service manager a few weeks later. So I showed up drove around with the manager and the tranny doesn't grind. It does however not want to let me into 2nd and the service manager witnessed that. It was a Saturday so he told me to drop it off Monday and he would have it taken car e of for me. I've been real busy and going through personal problems so I haven't made it back to the dealership until now. I dropped it off Monday, told them I'd been in twice before for the same problem and had already drove around with the service manager. They called me yesterday and said the tech wanted to replace the synchros, that I could come pick up the car and take it back when the parts arrived. He didn't say if they were able to reproduce the grind, but I'm assuming so. Let's see how it goes. |

**Orange Krate Update**
Hi folks,
I just wanted to give you a little update on my 2011 LS3. The car now has 8900 miles on it. I installed a Skip Shift Eliminator to see if that might help. Indeed it did make the car seem easier to shift but there is still the notchy feeling and I am now having intermittent issues getting the car to go into reverse. The trans will go in reverse at times partially. It feels like it is in reverse and I hear the back up sensor beep in dash, I let out the clutch and GRIND! It isn't in gear and the stick pops out of whatever it is trying to slide into. It is so strange because the only thing I can compare it to is when the old manual adjustable shifting arms on my M22 Muncie were out of adjustment I would get the same sort of partial engagement and grind. My guess is that the clutch isn't fully released due to loss of pressure or failure to disengage the pressure plate. If it were a M22 I would know what to do. The trans would be out and on the table getting all new goodies if the shifter adjustment rods didnt cure the problem. Will go back to the dealer and I am calling the Chevrolet Customer Service line. |

Looking back on Rick's post, looks like they ordered the new carbon blocking ring, so it seems like there may be a tsb out

Actually you can see the install on my "The Birth of Orange Krate" journal. It is in the right spot. I had the problem with reverse both before and after the install. The shifting is better with the SSE installed but...big but... it is still grinding, it has the inherent notch as many have indicated in this thread, and it is regularly irregular which makes it hard for any shop to diagnose or duplicate. I drive a stick all day long! It is not me. As for the SSE, my install photos and DIY instructions for the SSE are now being incorporated into the product's factory instructions! They liked it that much.

Hey guys, not sure if this is still an active post but I would like some advice if anyone wishes to give it. I bought my 2011 Camaro in November and it spent a good bit of time in the garage so I just started to notice the issues discussed in this thread recently. It has been to two different dealers for a transmission related problem in the past, with a documented case on file with Chevrolet customer service. The original issue I was having related to an ungodly "shuttering" noise that the trans would make when it was under any kind of load in 1st gear and the clutch was pushed to the floor (such as slow speed parking lot maneuvering). Both dealers claimed this was a normal condition, but I find that hard to believe.
Now my car is starting to make noise when completing a 1st to 2nd gear shift, almost like the ones seen in these videos but not as severe. Keeping in mind that my car has less than 3000 miles on it, I think it is safe to say that the problem will only get worse. I am about to take this car back to the dealer soon to try and remedy this situation, I am not looking forward to the constant bickering that I assume will follow with them trying to tell me this is a normal condition once again. Does anyone have any specific tips on how to handle this? I have been driving a manual transmission car all my life with no problems so I know this is not a normal condition or a case of operator error. Thanks in advance! |

5 qts of Redline D4 ATF really helped my M6 shift more smoothly. Especially noticeable at the strip. Amazon.com has it. My cold 1-2 shifts are greatly improved as well.

Just had my 2011 SS M6 in for the Mass yearly inspection I also reported the 1st - 2nd grind with my trans, took the tech for ride and replicated the 1st to 2nd gear grind
so it's now documented with my dealer, he's following up with GM to see what can be done.. Car 100% stock. waiting on a call back.. we will see

I think this is a bigger problem than GM may realize. Anyone who is having this problem should come forward and say something to their dealer. If enough of us are having these issues, GM will be forced to do something.

Something like this could force them to issue a massive Campaign..... It would not look good for them as far as negative publicity and $$$. And that is probably why they're in "denial".
