Rock chips are definitely a problem on my 13 1LS. I have 20 inch rims on during the summer months and they are wider than the stock 18's I run in the winter. I do have the factory molded splash guards but the gills still get blasted. I did install a patch of 3M clear vinyl in that area but it still occasionally suffers a chip or two. I also have the clear vinyl on the front bumper and leading edge of the hood and those areas are in great shape. I'd rather drive my car and enjoy it than save it for someone else so a few battle blemishes are bound to happen.

You don't know the rock chip struggles till you meet a Z/28 owner.

All 5th gens have this potential problem. If you catch it early and use good protection then you can avoid the gills and rocker areas from being sanded by rocks.

I already have a few tiny chips around the gills, and I'm not even at 1k miles yet. Just a by-product of the rear tire width, I doubt there's anything to be done aside from a clear bra solution of sorts.
As for the front, leave a ton of extra space between yourselves and other vehicles, and you can drastically reduce paint damage there. Easier said than done in traffic situations of course.

Trofeo's aka Rock Throwers don't care about anything besides themselves. Touch up and Xpel quote was about 5g. I think I will just wait and repaint when the time comes. The factory paint is poor to say the least. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Added OEM ZL1 Guards and Xpel film when new, this so far has prevented any damage (enoyable DIY project).

I am with your approach. From a few feet away or at speed they are unnoticeable, and I can live with that.

We don't have any chips around the gills on our 2014. Of course I did install a set of SLP fades right after we bought it. But around where the fades are there are zero rock chips.

ROCK CHIPS. THE GILL AREA IS NOT A CONCERN FOR ME. I JUST DRIVE THE CAR AND I AM GLAD THAT I OWN ONE. BUY ONE AND ENJOY EACH DRIVE. |
