Since it's a first car, I would say a used Impala or used cobalt....

I hate to jump on the wise old man bandwagon, but you really need to consider what you are purchasing...for a 16yo kid. Just imagine what we all were like as a teen. Invincible, love to show off, race, etc... I cannot foresee a parent EVER regretting the purchase of a large, slow, POS like Ford LTD or other tank. Buy a safe car, not a cool car. This will also teach them to appreciate what they can earn as they get older if they save up. Maybe save the money, buy a POS and get a fixer upper muscle car that you both can work on for years.

I'm sure that you or others may poo poo this, but spoiling a kid is never the right thing. Again, buy safe not cool.

I totally agree you and i'm only 21. My first car was a two door 1986 blazer. It was safe, ended up being cool and was a tank tank. My friends also loved it because we could all fit in it (you may have trouble with a coupe). When your a kid, two seaters aren't the greatest thing nor are nicer two door coupes, also backseats backseat are handy for multiple reasons. Insurance was slow and I got to take it off roading a bit. I would say on older midsized suv would be a good first car that you can get for relatively cheap. Save the money so you can buy something nice or so you can have money for mods after showing enough responsibility to own a car. Would be a shame to fix something up or get something nice and then have it get abused.
