Yes but with every car the pan doesn't hold ALL the the fluid in the trans, it probably hold 4-5 quarts the other 7 are somewhere in the trans. Flushes are usually better but I don't want to pay 500 for the dealer to do it when all they use is a machine that uses the cars pump anyway.

I know what you are saying. Some mechanics do not like using the flush machines. They say it can do damage to some trans parts. Since I have a larger pan with a drain plug I can change mine more often. I have almost 40K on my car and have changed it once when I added the new larger pan.

so what your saying is drain the fluid like an oil change??? When ever I do an oil change just to the trans fluid too with that drain plug? Where did you get the pan from? And where did you get the dip stick from?

Anyone know if the V6 tranny is similar?
Do it right by dropping the pan, and use the factory fill method.

I wanted to add my experience in here. I made an oops from inattentiveness and removed the bottom "plug" on accident and was pretty lost as what to do initially. There's actually a sticker right on the pan that tells you how to fill it correctly. Pretty good thinking on GM's part.

There is actually a small sticker right on the trans fluid pan that shows you how to check your fluid (see picture). I just added around 3 quarts and followed the directions from the sticker. I also talked with my main mechanic at my chevy dealer and he told me that's how they do it, for future reference to all.

Put in fluid in the side fill cap, run the car for a few second through the gears parked, remove the center "plug", once the fluid slows to a slow drip, plug it up and your good. All while the car is level and running.
Do not, I repeat do not turn off the car with the plug out!
It's a pretty simple procedure once you have a way to put the fluid in that side plug.

So I'm a little confused... should we or should we not attempt to do this ourselves?

From what I'm getting from this thread here, basically it's pretty dang hard to get all of the transmission fluid out of the tranny without some special pumps or whatever.

Yeah it's once every 70-100k miles as most people agree with, I feel like I'm needing a tranny fluid change here soon... So what do people recommend?

If you drop the pan and change the filter, you'll get 50% out (some is still in the torque converter). I did a dipstick, B&M pan and upgraded filter. Now, I can drain and fill much easier. I drain and fill every 10k miles since my car is modified heavily..

So what's the best way to go about doing this then?

I'm at 75k miles, it's about that time to change my transmission fluid + rear differential while I'm at it.

Should I have the dealer do it? Or buy these parts and do this?

Can't answer that for you really. Mine was a different setup and I was comfortable doing it as I had the service manuals...

Ok. I just put on a trans cooler. And, I know I lost some fluid and gained some fluid capacity. So....... I put a quart in just to check where it was. I used the rubber fill tube on the top then put the rubber back in. Then started the car, ran through gears, let it heat up. Then with the car running and on 4 jack stands to keep it level, I unbolted the check level bolt from the bottom of the pan. And the fluid just keeps gushing out. How can this be? I know I lost fluid and gained capacity. What did I do wrong????
