I shoot only in RAW. It's just that I have a 21 MP dslr and the RAW images are over the allowable limit of gmail attachments, so gmail wouldn't let me send a RAW image as an attachment.

I love shooting RAW images and tweaking them myself in Lightroom and Photoshop. I just have never played with HDR before. I want to delve into that soon.

Now, I'm not a huge fan of overlapping multiple exposures (HDR) and this is the reason. HDR works only for landscapes, and fake HDR never seems to work. The dark backdrop in the original gave off more of a menacing look, and makes the car hit you a little harder when you see it. The HDR rendering blew the highlights out too much, and smudged the horizon.

Same here, lightroom + raw rocks! Im not a big fan of most hdr images, but ive seen a few that ive enjoyed and that worked out well. The last post of mine was just some general info for anyone getting into it. Im always surprised how many people have nice dslr cameras and shoot them with auto settings in compressed formats, so I just like to educate where I can

lil_red_v6,

Can I give you my 2 cents?

If yes... read...

if not.... skip...

2 cents:
If you like to make your HDR photos look better start by staying away from the halo effect. That's my #1 complain of HDR images. You can clearly see it in the black Camaro photo you did. The rear wheel and the pavement... there is a change of brightness in the pavement as you move away from the tire.

The other problem with HDR images is that if you go to wild with it you will lose highlights and shadows... Don't be afraid of showing some black and some white. Example the Mustang photo... the windows that let light in are grey... and the shadows are almost non existant.

Try to make your HDR look more natural and you will make a great HDR effect.

Just trying to help you out. I tried out HDR a while back and found it to be very useful in some situations but it isn't for all photos.

Anyway, have fun!

Anyone use the CS5 HDR toning feature? It's pretty fun to play around with. I'm playing with the trial of CS5 right now up from 7.0 (HUGE JUMP).

Or try CS5 portable. It'll fit on a USB and I think it's free... It covers the basics.
