I bet if you could time the two events that the "Delay time" between your first motion to shift gears and the actual engagement of the next gear is alot less than it seems...
I don't know if you have been in a car when someone is power shifting or not. I had my 68 Camaro's clutch engaging just a little off the floor board. When in gear and under a lot of torque, you can pull really hard on the shifter and it wasn't coming out of gear until you kicked the clutch pedal. Now I mean kick the pedal. It would fly into the next shift because you would be pulling hard. Well less than a second.

I had a Porsche Boxster S with tapshift. There was a slight delay but it was way less than a full second. I would say it was quicker than manually selecting a gear and releasing the clutch. It wasn't a performance improvement, though. In Drive, that sucker was ALWAYS in the right gear. Modern automatics are amazing devices.

off topic but I've driven an M3 with the SMG transmission and all I can say is that tranny is GARBAGE.

This technology of the car letting you hold a gear isn't anything new. Shit, the honda fit has had it for years.

If I was going to get an auto, then I would just let the thing shift itself. Otherwise, your kinda just pretending to do work.

Exactly. It was kind of demoralizing to discover I couldn't outshift my Boxster's auto. Right now I drive a manual-shift Civic and it's great fun, but something tells me a good 5- or 6-speed auto could do the same thing for me. Mash the throttle for redline, light throttle for shortshifting. Autos don't even hurt MPG anymore.

It's kind of like traction control in motor racing. You know it makes better lap times, but takes the fun out of it. Damn technology.

Personally, I think the shifters look very cheap compared to the corvettes paddle shifters. On the camaro, the buttons are a lot smaller and not as sporty/cool looking as other cars paddle shifters. GM will probably improve the design for the Z28 model if it ever comes out. Does anyone think we'll be able to change the paddle shifters to resemble the corvettes????

Swap the steering wheel? Personally, I like the ones in the camaro. They're small and unobtrusive.

I got a question for those of you that know up from down. Say you switch it into "M" mode, and use the shifter buttons. Im in 5th and doing 75. I downshift 3 times just being a dumbass. Is my transmission F'ed?

if its going to mess anything up, it wont let you do it. and im sure it can do 75 in 3rd anyway. i get to like 72 in second in a 95 V6 automatic camaro LT. but like i said, if the speed is too high it will "deny" the shift.

and im pretty excited for it. im sure leaving it in true auto will improve performance and mpg, but every once in a while i think it will be fun.

and as for down shifting during braking, that is only for SS models in the Competition mode for stability control.
