Seems like the general consensus here is "get what you want"... so, what do you want?

Get what suits you!

Back in the day my wife and I had 4 Manual vehicles between the two of us (Wrangler, S-10 4x4, Fiero, and her Echo) and then...bam...her left knee went out. She was out of commission and could not drive stick for 4 years...so we started getting automatics. She drives stick again now, and really loves them.

We've decided three cars is perfect...4x4 truck for crappy weather and hauling, econo-car for daily driving, and fun 5-speed for crazy mountain driving!

If you have more than one car, it's nice having at least one of each...to tap in to your practical side, unleash your fun side, and cover your a$$ if something unforeseen happens! Arm leg, shoulder, or neck injury can really screw you over if all you have is a manual tranny.

I have owned a '94 Z-28 and a '01 T/A WS-6. Both with automatic. Both were fantastic. I am now driving an Eclipse with a manual while I await my 2SS, with auto.

I drive in heavy traffic and I hate all the shifting with the manual. Its a pain.

Get the Auto. It has paddle shifters anyway.

No better summary than that. I'm sure the auto will be a great transmission, but the feeling of being connected with the car is never the same. With a manual, the car feels more like an extension of you. It's far more rewarding and more fun in my humble opinion. But in the end, you should get what you want. Just be prepared for some good-natured ribbing about having an automatic Camaro

Jim Rockford drove an automatic Firebird in The Rockford Files. It gets no cooler than that!

First of all get what you are most comfortable with and if you have never driven a manual before this is not the time to start. Secondly if you do plan to use the car on a daily basis in traffic manual will drive you crazy. Thirdly I agree that performance is less than an issue today than perhaps 10 years ago. I should know I had a 600hp WS6 TransAm A4 and it blew everyone off the road .....

Just make sure you have fun....

At least you can drink while you drive an A6...

I think both will be great, especially with the tap-shift. I've been back and forth between the two myself, autos are much nicer when it's your daily driver that will get stuck in bad traffic occasionally (especially as I'm likely to move to a bigger city in a couple of years), and I hate stop signs at the top of steep hills with a manual. The fun and control of a manual tranny through twisties, hills (the ones without stop signs), and in just regular driving is just a more satisfying experience IMO. When looked at for a daily driver without considering cost it's still a tough choice, but paying $1k for something I would rather not have many days is seeming more and more like a silly choice, at least for myself.

This can be summed up in quite a simmple manner..

In the Knight Rider TV show, the car Michael Knight drove while he was in the car for filming was an automatic Firebird. However All the scenes where KITT was doing all of the stunts, tricks, crazy leaps and driving were all done in Manuals..

I don't get the traffic argument; I drive roughly 70 miles each way for work and much of it is in heavy traffic and even my beater work car is standard. It hurts your leg for maybe a week before you get used to it.

I also live in a hilly area and it's not that bad at all, plus like many said it's just way more fun.

As for performance, the manual has the slight edge.

Depends on the driver. I have maybe 3000+ kills and about 10 losses. Most with automatics.

Believe me you won't be disappointed with the tap-shift auto. There is more then enough power and the fact that you can't drive a stick will save you time and money on blown clutches. Enjoy the auto , don't worry about what they say. If you've got the 2010 Camaro in your driveway and they don't ..well i guess you win !!
