BTW, look up the Texas traffic code. If you don't place anyone else at risk, a burnout would possibly be legal depending on local laws. Reckless or Careless are usually attached to causing others to be at risk. Guess a jury would have to subjectively decide if that were the case. There has to be a measuring stick of sorts. Speeding there is a set limit. Intoxicated driving has a set limit. What an officer considers improper or excessive is not so easily measured in certain situations. Apparently in their mind I was driving unsafe even though there was no loss of traction and I did not leave my lane nor exceed the speed limit therefore violating no law, city or state. I was surprised that after the stop there was an apparent need for 3 cars and officers to agree to give me a citation for something that is not a violation of law. With nearly 30 minutes to discuss the issue, wouldn't they determine what is or isn't a violation?

Also, the only thing that comes close to excessive acceleration in Texas is the laws against racing which have the requirement that you be racing against another vehicle or clock from one location to another

One man crime spree? Nobody likes the "I can do better than that" game, but I can't pass up the opportunity to mention that I was once pulled over FOUR times in one hour.
Out of all, I only ended up with one citation for an equipment violation. Had been a moving violation that got me red- lighted to start with, but even the cop who got me there was pretty cool... no moving cite, no cite for minor in possession (I think he knew how much it hurt to pour 24 cans of rare and precious beer out onto the ground!). Subsequent stops were for equipment, but the final time I got the red light, I stopped, got out of the car (not protocol these days, BTW), walked back to the cruiser, and in my most irritated voice quickly mentioned how this was the FOURTH freakin' time in an hour... and asked him "Why?" The cops put his hands up (not too often the roles are reversed like that!) and said, "Hey, whoa, sorry... you just looked suspicious is all... sorry to bother you, go on home!" Since then... my driving habits and equipment issues have been significantly different... haven't had a citation in ten years now... knock on wood! |

When we drove by the police station with a six-pack on the roof of the car and were pulled over...the cops let us go because we were almost home...The vast majority of discretion and judgement exercised by the police was fortunately in my favor...Not so with kids in today's world. Anything they do "wrong", and they are "in the computer" forever, from driving records to job resumes... Definitely don't blame the police or the "system"...that's just the way it is. The police deal with a rediculous amount of craziness out there that never existed in my youth...and they are under the microscope to be mind-readers and flawless in their duties like never before.... Not sure what my point is here, but even when I did get in trouble with the law, or cited for speeding or whatever, it always popped into my mind, that man, I'm just lucky it didn't happen everytime I deserved it!..Peace! |

IMO, cops should get double penalty. You're paid to uphold the law yet break them. |

Cops do that ALL the time. Also, you can't drive 10 minutes without breaking some law. They make it near impossible to follow the law. It's the state's biggest revenue source. |

oh and front plate laws are stupid in my opinion. If you're not speeding or visibility violating any law, why should anybody need to look at your front plate. In IL, they have argued that the front plate helps for vehicle identification in such times when the rear plate is not visible such as a severe accident where the rear plate gets mangled or the car's back end gets jammed up against something. But I personally think that argument is very weak. Can't cops look up cars by VIN if they need?

I don't know if its like this everywhere across the country, but at least with my dept we would in a sense pay double or more because not only would you have to pay the fine, but then when admin gets ahold of it....you face possible suspension time as well depending on the severity of the offense. Example: we each get a speeding ticket for 5 over.... you would pay a fine of $20 plus costs. I would most likely pay the max $95 plus costs....then most likely get 4 hrs suspension at +$30 an hour on top of it.

The drinking age was 18 when I was in high school and there was no open container law. And oddly, it didn't seem like there was as many DUI's and alcohol related crashes back then. Or, maybe no internet and 24 tv news to bring them to our attention........ |

Why is it in Iowa that we get 2 plates, but when it comes to re-registration you only get 1 stcker to put on the REAR plate?
