^^ what bob said. The point of Automatic and convertible ZL1s is market share!!! Chevy is brilliant. I stole a customer from Ford and she bought an automatic ZL1 from me. Her current car was a Roush 427 Mustang custom ordered in automatic.

But if we want to get techie about it.

However, in 1997, the Berlinetta (a Ferrari) was the first ever road car to be equipped with the innovative F1-style gearbox management system. Derived directly from Formula 1, where it made its debut in 1989 winning the Brazilian Grand Prix, the electro-hydraulic system was operated by paddles behind the steering wheel.

Seems like the F1 tech is in production cars

It all depends, and there is no clear answer.

In the old days of muscle cars, the general concensus was a muscle car was meant to be a stick.

These days I still love to row th eboat, and that's why I have a stick.

However, automatics have come a looong way especially the auto in the ZL1. They shift better, quicker, and more consistantly.

Are you going to drive the car as a daily driver or more for just pleasure. If it'll be your daily driver, then shifting through the gears in everyday stop and go traffic might get to be a bit tedious from time to time.

Which will be faster? either one. The automatic however will be the most consistant.

Also, note that typically, an automatic will have more drivetrain loss than a manual.

Will this be different for a ZL1? Time will tell.
But, now take a look at every non-stock fast list. Mostly autos. It's because they are faster more consistantly on the strip. Same reason my brother in law runs auto in his pro-street mustang.

Some are going to buy the ZL1 to drag race as it meets spec for several classes in both NHRA & IHRA. And an auto is about the only way to run consistant and not many can launch and shift a manual to run quicker in the quarter mile than an auto. Now if you just want the fun of shifting on the street or are going to autocross or road race the manual would make the most sense.

Look at 1/4 mile times done by the team

I have always like a stick > I auto-crossed for many yrs and prefer the auto.Keep in mind back then they only had 3 speed auto, in vett,s.
I am 69 and if chevy doesn,t get on the stick when my ZL-1 gets here I will be 70.Camaro team 1/4 mile times are so close only the pro would be concerned. The auto will no doubt have a better resale value as well as more appeal to a large group of people. Not many younger set can afford or want one of these wow go getter's.

Peak power, yes. But an auto can - with the proper converter - keep the engine in the sweet part of the power band better than a manual. That means that average power througout the rpm range of each gear can be quite close.

Something else...an auto is generally somewhat easier on driveline parts than a stick, and is easier to launch without wheelspin (again, in general).

First of all, that post with LS3 vs L99 was a total waste of time and in the context of this thread meant nothing. Now if you want to slap a 3200 stall on the L99, then we're talking.

What I hate about these auto vs manual threads is the condescending manner in which a lot of manual guys talk down to auto guys. Like we're not 'man enough' or 'driver enough' for a manual, and it seems that auto guys are always explaining why they drive an auto while manual guys don't really have to explain why they drive a manual.

One poster mentioned being almost 70 with medical problems (edit:a buddy on another site), and my wife is a 40 year diabetic with feet and shoulder problems. Are we supposed to give up the rite to drive a fast car because of medical problems? Am I supposed to tell my wife of 30 years to kiss my ass, that I'm getting a manual car and she can't drive it? I don't freaking think so.

A lot of you guys are younger and in better health than us older drivers, but we also like to run the quarter, just like you do.

Chevy was smart to bring out an auto Camaro, vs. Ford only having their GT 500's in manual only. As mentioned earlier, Ford will lose customers that have to have an auto.

Other items about auto vs manual have been touched on, so I'll leave this thread as is.

That's fine, I'll be boring and lame in my auto ZL1, while you're being cool in your manual 2002 TA WS6?

I can drive a stick, but I chose the auto for convenience. I don't race on a regular basis, but I do drive around town on a regular basis. For me the choice was easy, automatic.
