The nozzles are different sizes so hopefully folks have a bit of common sense to not get them mixed up. Kinda the same reason in plumbing gas uses a left hand thread as to not get things mixed up.

IMHO.

On a semi related note: I hate the one nozzle for for all grades pumps. I know it's nit-picky, but hear me out. If the person before me pumps low grade, when I go to pump high grade I'm getting a hose full of low grade. It's really not a substantial amount, but I'm paying for premium and my first quart or two is low grade. Furthurmore, if the person after me pumps low grade they are getting some premium for free that I paid for.

Before you make the argument that it oesn't matter that much, I pose this question....why don't they run diesel thru the one nozzle pumps?

My friend who works on pumps says the hose holds aproximatly 8oz. What a "smart"? person could do would be buy a half gallon of "87" after buying 93 to get the 8oz of 93 still in the hose. You'd still have the first 8oz of 87 but at least you wouldn't have paid 93 price for it.
Sometimes I think I think too much!!!!

Rob 3-D has a point about the hose. I saw a person at a diesel pump lifting the hose while the pump was shut off, also used for semi's, trigger the nozzel draining the fuel ourt the 12' huge hose. Now the next fella to use that pump probubly pays $.50 or more filling back up the hose before the fuel gets to the nozzel. I always go to a Shell station with independant octane nozzels.

Always like your reasoning Sir.

Good Point and I will reconsider in the future. I live in the sticks and they are just the closest to home.

I have a Bluetooth ODB II adapter and Android device. What app can I use and how do I determine which table is being used at any given time?

I searched but cannot find the TSB referenced. Does anyone have the link? I'm due for my 36k service and want to bring this to their attention.

Thanks again for the information and lively discussion. I was just ranting over what I must agree is a very minor issue. I certainly didn't lose any sleep over it but as usual, wound up learning a thing or two from the C5 family.

I have only used 87 in my car, fast enough for me.
Haven't had enough nerve to put 93 in

You could add octane booster, but it has limited effect. When it says it increases octane four points, it is not from 87 to 91, it is from 87 to 87.4.

One would think its illegal to sell gas like that.
And offering the difference back does not make it any better.

I always put in the normal 83 or whatever. Cheapest from RaceTrac am I doing it wrong? What is this whole fuse pull and putting 91/93 octane fuel?

Fuse pull is for V8.

Based on your profile you have a V6 so you don't have to worry about it.

By the time I noticed the tank was nearly full. I went in and told them they should have bags on the premium nozzles and need much bigger signs. They asked if I wanted the $1.30 difference in price refunded. I told them that wasn't the point but stopped short of explaining why since I figured they really didn't care anyway.

Guess I get to try the fuse pull after this tank but really it's quite a shame that a $40k car is permanently degraded performance-wise by running 87 octane just once without knowing the little fuse pull trick.

Come on GM. How hard can it be to automatically set the timing tables back to normal after a certain period of time or certain number of miles?

And how the hell is it legal to pump 87 through a 91 pump? </rant>

if they are selling gas of a lower grade at a higher grade price, and they know it, that's not legal

If there is a premium only nozzle you were getting premium. It would be strange to see how the gas station got regular gas in the premium tanks. The truck would have to do that, and they wouldn't. Maybe that post it was put up the day the truck came. Sometimes they come late at night.

If the clerk refunded the money, it's because they didn't know any better. Don't worry OP, your car, and your wallet will be ok

Having managed a gas station for years now, I can tell you firsthand that we will bag off nozzles (when low on unleaded) or put signs up overtop the plus & premium grades (when low on premium) if we are low long before we ever run out of that type of fuel. This is usually between 500 - 1,000 gallons for anything but unleaded, with each tank having about an 8,000 gallon capacity for the less popular fuels.

Like the fuel pump in your car, the pump in our tanks does not like it when you are trying to pump fuel when it is low. I have burned up a pump up before having allowed a tank to go too low on fuel.

I'd feel pretty sure saying you were definitely pumping premium fuel, and that the sign was up only as a precautionary measure to prevent pump damage.

What scientific evidence is there that the fuse pull does anything? I find it very hard to believe the ECM is going run retarded spark for tankful after tankful after sensing detonation.
