I think that each car has its strengths and weaknesses. A majority of which is subjective based on the drivers' needs.
I go off facts as the primary decision maker...numbers, figures, etc. Utility trumps all else most of the time. It's true the Evo isn't the best looking vehicle (the X is a step in the right direction--but still not exactly great looking IMO). It's also true and pretty common knowledge the EVO out handles most vehicles out there...that includes even Lamborgini's driven by professionals on a track. It's an excellent piece of engineering, even though its simply a 15k econobox with a 15k drivetrain. But all things equal while it has a strong following, I don't think it has the staying power that the Camaro has. They're both driving machines and do well in the respective niche's. Keep in mind the type of target markets these cars are built for as well...and that will explain a lot in terms of why things are the way they are with either platform. I chose to purchase the SS to replace the EVO, only because it was the only car with an engine (stock) that could peform close to what my car has currently. |

I love my Camaro and there never was a question on what I wanted, but I certainly do appreciate the amount of awesome engineering that went into the Evo.

I just don't get the whole us vs them lack of respect thing that goes on. Since we're already WAY off topic...
First off- have you ever seen American Graffiti? My 67 year old Dad was part of that lifestyle in his youth. I hear stories about it all the time. At one point he even got a factory prepped Dodge and dealer mechanic help to make sure he did well to draw in business. Kids are doing the exact same thing now that they did then well before Fast and Furious came out. They find the best car they can afford then over time they wrench on it to try to make it as fast and unique as they can. Some are much more talented then others. There aren't a lot of good affordable V8s lying around nowdays either. Some are rice, but so is chopping a Merc when you think about it- purely cosmetic. You hardly see a crappy chop-top Merc now, but when that trend started- people did it in their garages and you got pretty mixed quality and did nothing for speed. Or Rat-Rods which are now cool but used to be just pieced together out of whatever you can find instead. It's a pretty thin line between POS and nostalgia sometimes. Street racing is bad. Streets are just too crowded now. I love to see that young people are still out working on their cars trying to make them better or faster with whatever they have. And frankly, kids have ALWAYS driven like dipshits. I'm 40 now with 19 years of spotless driving record. I did some dumb-as-hell things when I was 20 though. As far as the Evo goes- not my cup of tea. But they sure managed to cram down a lot of technology for the price. (edit: just a side note, Evo owners get tons of attention from the young gearheads. I wouldn't be surprised if it does become a classic like the Skylines and the TT Supras are starting to become) Last edited by MrIcky; 07-28-2009 at 10:41 AM. |

Defending the Camaro is not even the point of that post. While it is a given the Evo can out handle stock for stock using that video as a comparison for what a 5th or 4th Gen can do against an Evo is the point & there is no doubt that the Camaro's or out on a sunday drive while the Evo is attempting hot laps

I would get the Camaro. Ive been up against EVO's and I know their potential, however the Camaro gets my vote for overall great car. Ive done my share of tuning and I know if I had the EVO i wouldnt leave the thing alone, It would leave me wanting more. I know the phases of owning a turbo car. Typically 1st more boost, then more intercooling, then ECU tuning, then bigger turbo, then more fuel, and then even more tuning or stand alone ECU. at this point you are way over the value of the EVO and your stuck in this loop of upgrading and fixing and your daily driving experience is out the door. The end result would be an awesome car but not worth the time and hassle IMO.
The camaro SS in stock trim is a great car and has plenty of power. just bolt-ons alone are more than enough for daily driven street car. and also its alot sexier |

you said "Overall HP rating/Power to weight: Camaro = (my) EVO 9" 390whp/3200lbs vs 380whp/3880lbs thats not "=" A 390awhp evo should run low 12's or high 11's and trap 115-117 mph Evo's are about function over form not the other way around . In its function there is the beauty . 2010 Camaro's look better .

My evo's been corner balanced and weighs in at 3428lbs w/ (a 150b driver) or 3278 without the driver, and the HP rating was estimated by Chris Black at AMS during a road tune to be about 380-390 at the wheels (he used dyno simulation software.) Averaged out this comes out to be 385hp. With the 15% added back in for the drivetrain HP loss it should be about 443 at the crank. This means that every 1 HP carries 7.4 lbs (rounded). The Camaro's weight is stated to be 3849--with a crank HP rating of 426. This means that every 1 HP carries 9 lbs (rounded). A difference of 1.6 lbs. IF you're looking at the wheel HP we're talking 385hp / 3228lb and 362hp / 3849. This is a power to weight ratio of 11.8% for the EVO and 9.4%.for the Camaro. We're talking 2.4% difference here in power to weight. While they're not exactly equal to the decimal...that's pretty damned close and your butt won't notice the difference. I love my EVO...but I'm not a nut-rider for the EVO cause, and I at least use realistic expectations and factual calculations. Your last statement I agree with though. I did buy the EVO for it's function...not form. I never really LOVED the looks of the car--but I love the handling of the car. There's no argument there. However it took a lot of modifcation to get the car where its at now. Taking the idea further...I'm still comparing a modified sport sedan to a STOCK musclecar. There's something for you as well. Stick a turbo and exhaust on the Camaro and some sway bars and perhaps stiffer springs...and I doubt the EVO would put up much of a fight. If you want to truly compare the two platforms...do it apples to apples. Last edited by Van; 07-29-2009 at 07:23 AM. |

My dad just got a IOM Camaro SS/RS,
I own a 03 Evo 8, I love his car, but think of it as a luxury muscle car, where as my car is more of a hardcore enthusiast's car. I love my car and his just the same, because I am a car enthusiast, Not a nutswinger that only likes/respects what they own. I appreciate all cars that have something to bring to the table, even two cars who are completely different in style like the Evo X and 2010 Camaro let the haters hate, and as my pops and I say, "it's the best of both worlds" |
