While I wasn't trying to gas up I had two other people looking with me for the button release. Then my son snapped out of it and said wait...... walked around the car and pressed it and it opened.

Duh moment for real

I sure hope Nards is still tuned in... I avoid fingerprints by using a stabbing motion with a sharp screwdriver. The tool can also be used to pry it open (if the latch malfunctions), to scrape bird crap off, or to start the car if you lose the keys.
