"Consumer Reports" An article about Car care myths on Oil Changes
http://www.consumerreports.org has an article this month on Car Care Myths beginning with Oil Changes to Washing your car Myths ..
Here's what they say about Oil Changes : Myth Engine oil should be changed every 3,000 miles. Reality Despite what oil companies and quick-lube shops often claim, it's usually not necessary. Stick to the service intervals in your car's owner's manual. Under normal driving conditions, most vehicles are designed to go 7,500 miles or more between oil changes. Changing oil more often doesn't hurt the engine, but it can cost you a lot of extra money. Automakers often recommend 3,000-mile intervals for severe driving conditions, such as constant stop-and-go driving, frequent trailer-towing, mountainous terrain, or dusty conditions. If you are a member to http://www.consumerreports.org and/or Subscribe to C.R. Magazine , you can read the whole article both on-line or Magazine in the Car Section .. ( I'm not sure which issue month it is in the Magazine).. |

GM spent a lot of money and time evaluating the merits of the oil life indictor. They could have spent NO TIME and NO MONEY to tell you to change your oil at 3000 miles and that you will void your warranty if you do not chage it that often......
...But GM decided to do a study and develop a system to help you save money and be a responsible oil consumer. They spend thier money to add sensors to every car they build just to tell the owner it will be OK for them to safely go longer between oil changes if the driving conditions warrant less frequent service. The dealer will do less oil changes in the service department but the consumer saves money (and oil). You can change it more often and do no damage to the car. That is just an uninformed decision. Unless you have sent your used oil to a lab for analysis, you are just shooting from the hip, (or keyboard), and we all got one of those. ![]() -Mark. |

I have attached a few screen shots of the manual and have highlighted some key areas. From what I gather, the oil should be changed at lease once a year no matter what the computer says. But if you read the part about Maintenance II you will need to change is every 10 months. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
