The best radar detector I have ever had was a CB. Yeah an old ass CB Breaker 1-9!!! Smokey and the Bandit that kind. Any time I do a long drive on a freeway it is the best friend you can have. The truckers will tell you the mile marker overpass exit what ever exactly where the cop is. Even if he is coming up from behind you you’ll hear it.

Custom installed K40 Calibre "DLH" model. No suction cups or anything to see to encourage a thief. People need to use them as they were intended and you should never put your trust in the unit to "save you"...rather to keep you alert and focused to your surroundings giving you just that slight advantage....seeing how we are the "prey" and revenue to a vast majority of jurisdictions.
This unit has alerted me 7 times in the 6 weeks I've had the car....including the Laser Diffuser on an IL State PoPo......say what you want but they do work if only to keep you alert. The LE around St. Louis is always lighting me up...guess I asked for it with the Victory Red paint. And if I do get a ticket (or multiple tickets), I pass it straight on to the manufacturer who will cover any and all fines during the first year. My lawyer can handle the points. |

I have a low-end Belltronics. No need to spend the price of two or three tickets to get one, kinda defeats the purpose.
I don't speed purposely though. It just serves as a warning to make sure I'm paying attention to my speed. Since the Camaro apparently has an alarm you can set to a certain speed, I probably won't put a radar detector in it. |

If you buy one, than Valentine
As several posters commented, they don't make you invisable and if you feel they do, you may speed more and the percentages will catch up to you. When airbags came out some people quit using their seatbelts because they thought the airbag made them invulnerable. NOT. After dozens of years logging miles as a road salesman. It's not worth it. If you want to strech your Camaro's legs find a track that has open track days. That, is some serious fun. The car control you learn will make you a better street driver, too |

I'm not perfect. I usually drive over the speed limit like most people do. But when I am in congested areas, it's not that hard to just follow the rules. I don't want to be the person that kills a pedestrian because I was driving too fast to see them step out from behind a parkled car. I don't object to radar detectors, i've had several. I have not used one for the last 4 years and have no violations during that time. I drive about 40K miles a year. It just takes common sense. If you get a citation for speeding, you probably deserve it and by being stopped, you may have saved a life.

For what it is worth, given these hard economic times, many government entities tax revenues are way down. Writing traffic citations can actually be a substantial revenue enhancer for them.

Valentine One FTW. After getting caught doing 84 in a 70 mph zone a couple of years ago, (although I was being torn a new one on the phone by a female...friend at the time) paying a fine and taking an online defensive driving course, I used W's tax stimulus to buy a V1. I like the arrows showing me what's going on around me.

The only problem with this theory is at least in the county where I work, if a ticket is say 75 dollars the local municipality only gets a small percentage (like 15 to 20 percent) of the 75 dollars the rest goes to the county. So for those of you that think the cops are writing tickets to generate revenue for their police dept. that is wrong. I write tickets to slow people down and be safer.

Radar and Laser detectors are pointless IMHO. The only way I could imagine, and have seen, one be beneficent to the user, is if the police pings you, and you slow down, and they keep pinging you as you drive by, they noticed you slowed down, and MIGHT not pull you over. (Like the 'Lazy Cop' Pheonix described earlier.) Detectors 'Detect' the impulse wave sent from the police unit to your car. Then it Blinks like mad when it says "I'm hit! I'm hit!". By the time your brain and its neuralproccesors actaully realize the light is blinking, if you notice it the nano-second it goes off, unless the Police officer is over 1 and 7/8ths of a mile away....He knows your speed, before you know you're hit. With the ones down here in Florida, They ping it once, grab your speed, go to pull you over. If they see your nose dip like there a chain attached to your front bumper and light post. They'll look for your radar detector as well. Radar Detectors and similar devices do not detect Police Officers or Highway Patrol. They detect the waves sent by them, at your car, and law enforcement WILL recieve the information no matter what your radar detector says. |

Be aware if you travel in Virginia they are illegal and they love to write tickets for radar dectors. In southwest Virginia I 77 is a big speed trap. I 77 on the West Va side speed limit is 70 and on the North Carlonia side, but in VA it is only 65. It is about an hour drive from the WV ine to the NC line and I travel this way a lot. It is not uncommon to see 6-7 vehicles pulled over on this section.
