If you can work on cars and know cars AND, this is "the big one here", have money to play with, I say get the 1st gen hands down, especially if it's going to be a show/cruise car. Remember, these cars require maintenance every once in a while, more so than the 2010 Camaro.
(As far as a 1st gen not being able to handle better or have the creature comforts or speed of a 2010 Camaro?!? Not true. There are pro-touring 1st gen Camaros out there that can outperform the 2010 Camaro, but, you're talking a WHOLE NEW LEVEL and tons of cash being involved.) |

This is very simple, are you a “gear head”? Do you enjoy getting your hands dirty? If you want to do all or most of the work on your Camaro grab a first gen. If you need reliable transportation and your going to rely someone else to do the work, buy a 2010 and get a warrantee.

Get the 1st gen and a daily driver and the insurance will be really cheap for both. The 1st gen can easily be made to put the smack down on the 5th, since your not carrying near as much weight (road course does not apply).
Also, since the market is down on the classics now its the perfect time to pick 1 up and watch it actually appreciate. |

I have a 1968 Camaro that has been modified for drag racing given to me by my father when I joined the Hartford Fire Department. When I mean modified, I mean parts dating back to the late 60's early 70's. The car is a blast from the past. I recently purchased a 2010 Camaro SS L99 and I love it, but IMO the 1968 Camaro is a better value, entertainer and more personal experience. When your driving a 1st Gen or any classic car there is nothing but motor. No computer, and in my case, no radio, heater or AC.
It's an experience like none other. If you want convenience buy a 2010 Camaro. If you want a Camaro which you WILL work on and maintain putting forth the effort to keep it running at top shape then buy a 1st Gen Camaro. The 2010 is a toy. With the 68 its personal. But thats my opinion.![]() ![]()

I see the points of many of you who love your first gens and the other classic cars of the era, but in my opinion, I am very glad to be alive in a day and age when technology is so far superior to the rudementary machines built 40 years ago. It's not just really nice to have A/C, a fully independent sophisticated suspension geometry, cruise control, remote security systems, and computers operating everything, technology helps make modern cars just built better.
The seams, gaps, and entire body structure of the 5th gen is so far superior to any of the best 1st gens to ever roll off the line it's not even funny. And no, I do not appologize for such a blunt statement. Those classics are classic, yes, but they're also dinosaurs. Panel gaps wider than the grand canyon (if they even match up evenly at all)..... rattles, torsion flex, and constant tune ups on the engine because the tollerences in mechanical engineering in the 1960's isn't even comparable to modern day computer aided design of an engine (which is a reason many companies are switching to 5-20 oil and strongly advise against anything thicker, but that's another story). Starting up an old carburated engine and getting it warm, well, thats a treat in and of itself sometimes. Again, nothing against the old rellics for showing at classic car shows and whatnot..... but for a car to drive, even only on Sunday's give me the 5th gen any and every day. |

Just wondering FASTBALL . Have you ever owned one of these Big block dinosaurs ? Rolling thru town with the windows down and hearing nothing but a big cam thru a good exhaust ! WOW Maybe its just me and a few others but even the day my 10 shows up it wont hold a candle to the older muscle . Possibly its just how we were raised . Just my 2 cents

At the time, in it's day, yes, those Camaros were great cars. Comparing them to every other 1967-1969 car on the road. Comparing them to a 2009 or 2010 car? Not even a fair comparison - the 2010 is beyond 40 years better. With the advent of computers (not just in cars but aiding in the design of them) in the 1980s I would say even a 4th gen is exponentially better than a 1st gen. Things like chassis dynamics, torsion, steering ratio, clutch feel, brake feel, structural rigidity, ergonomics, fuel economy, and panel/interior fitment were things not even on the minds with engineers in the 1960s, and I guarantee you were topics under very, very tight scrutiny with Ed Welburne and his team for this Camaro. The sound of the engine is one thing, but it is far from what makes a car a car for me. Very, very low on the list. Besides, the '10 makes a good enough sound for me. It's by no means quiet as a Lexus. |

Get a beater until you get some experience under your belt and you'll have that Camaro a LOT longer!
