Because thats what sets design appart from engineering. Engineering makes everything functional, design makes it look good. Designers define the style of the car, give it its feel and attitude. Alot of that useles stuff helps to sell the car. Many people want to have something that looks cool, or sleek, or classy, or fast, or whatever. The mechanics of the car come after that, for them.
