I don't know about a stock c5 beating you if he was an auto. My 98 ran like crap stock. there were times I would run 13.70's at 101mph. From what I heard the stock tuning in the 98 was not that good though.

There was issues with Early LS1 cars getting defective Knock Sensors... never heard of a tune issue though.

Not that it matters much, but what year, 2000 and up had different gearing in the 6-speed. My 99 bone stock on run flats went 12.88 @ 109, so a little faster than an auto SS and right in there with a MN6. With 100 progressive shot and intake I ran 11.95 so not really a fair fight.
