I know you're IP adress and where you are posting from. Trust me it's not that hard. You think there aren't already people listening to your conversations?

As I've said:

If 50 people already can listen in, you should just allow ANOTHER 50?

If your doctor sees you naked, you shouldn't be concerned if your neighbors do, too?

If one of your neighbors, who works at the SSA office, has all your private information, then your other neighbors should?

If law enforcement types can listen in when needed, then they should also be able to listen in when not needed? (OnStar sued FBI because they were doing that.)

If X number of people can listen in appropriately, then X-.9X won't use the information inappropriately? Financial information, legal...

And forget about that for now: What about just wanting to be private?

Why do I have to defend my desire for privacy?
I do agree that is should be an option and not a standard feature on gm cars.

the F14 fuse only does the hands free phone portion of it. but you can disconnect the wiring to the computer as well.

[QUOTE=CamaroSpike23;1140146]thats what they tell you. lol

pull the Onstar fuse. if my car gets stolen, I dont want it back. thats what my insurance is for.

Great, and thanks: But:

(1) WHERE IS THE FUSE. I've been asking how to disable, but getting mostly argument about why I'd question OnStar in the first place...

(2) If the insurance company considers OnStar to be an anti-theft device, and if I disable it, then mightn't they consider NOT paying in the event of a successful theft?

1) I'm pretty sure that one is in the fuse box under the hood.

2) That is a definite possibility, though in reality those two things would not disable the GPS system. Its a high possibility they would disable the mic though.

[QUOTE=Xanthos;1140216]The onstar microphone can't be activated from outside the car. Each and every time the onstar microphone is activated, its from a signal inside the car - a push of a button usually, or the car sensing a collision. There's a reason why onstar can use GPS to find stolen vehicles, but not the microphone to listen to the thieves.

OnStar sued the FBI for listening in inappropriately to people's car conversations. The mic can be heard-through even if the button is not pushed.

No, I don't feel the need to disable all systems of OnStar. I drive very simply, don't road-race. I'm a good driver....., though I don't like them gathering driving metrics without reporting that to me. (I do think the dash should relay when info is transmitted and what that info is -- wouldn't one have a right to know, and perhaps also an interest?)

But I do want privacy.

IS THE ONSTAR MIC THE SAME ONE THAT IS USED FOR THE BLUETOOTH?

Because I do want and use the Bluetooth, making calls from the car.

I'm about 90% certain that its the same mic.

And the problem is that all systems are controlled by the same onstar computer (which supplies its own power; that way it can still run in a collision even if the electrical system is damaged). So unless you find the mic and just manually cut the wires to it... you won't be able to disable "just the mic."

the F-14 fuse for the Universal Hands free phone portion is in the fuse panel in the intstrument panel in the dash.

and if your phone is within range of the car, it will connect to the bluetooth and be active

Wow talk about paranoia. You are worried about Onstar listening in though a mic that they do not have the ability to turn on but you carry around a cell phone? If you really are worried about people listening in then Onstar is the least of your problems. Other companies have the ability to listen in to your conversations though your cell phone, home phone, the speakers on your computer and the speakers in your tv. Not to mention phone companies regularly audit and record random phone calls so chances are you have had dozens of your conversations recorded and listened to without you knowing plus they can do this without you making or receiving a call.

As for disabling it, if you do you will lose the bluetooth. They both are controlled by the same module.

Aim,

with your privacy concerns, why dont you make appointments with you clients and dont discuss snything by phone or car...I really dont think you can be absolutely private anymore...anyone who talks to you knows that there are hackers everywhere.....dont carry such a hevvy burden on yourself....if things are that personal and private...then make those arrangements .Chill a little bit,and enjoy your new car.

Short answer:
* Remove fuse (in-car fuse panel)
* Unplug J1, J2, J3 and antenna connectors from onstar module
* Leave J4 connector on onstar module plugged in!

More Detailed Answer..lol
OnStar is EASY to disable....

a) Remove the one and only fuse for OnStar

b) Find your OnStar module , you might have to pry up the carpet to get at the VCIM (OnStar Module).

c) UNPLUG connectors J1, J2 & J3 ...and UNPLUG the 2 antenna connections. One antenna is for OnStar's GPS signal. The second antenna is OnStar's Cellular Phone Antenna.

d) The 4th connector, J4, is part of your car's Computer Network Data Bus. LEAVE that connector alone! If you unplug J4, your engine will not start. If you REALLY want the OnStar module out of your car THAT bad, you NEED to install a termination resistance! The "easiest solution" is to just leave the OnStar module in the car with J4 connected! The OnStar module will be TOTALLY DEAD!!

If you disable the Onstar module or the microphone, you will lose your Bluetooth capability
