DRIVE IT! I ride my Harley on those kind of road trips and nothing beats the expierience of travelling the distance in or on one of your favorite things. I have been to SD on my Harley. I was there last summer. I feel sorry for the posers that passed me while trailering their garage queens. They have no idea of what they are missing. This is an expierirence that you will remember forever. DO IT! Mount Rushmore is breathtaking. Make sure that you visit Deadwood. Wild Bill and Calamity Jane are buried at Mount Mariah and Wild Bill's chair is in the old #10 Saloon.

Take the Camaro and start building some good memories in it. That is why you have it and the mileage will be inconsequential. Enjoy the heck out of that trip.
The driving reason behind me ordering a Camaro was that two of my closest friends are both battling cancer this year. It made me think about how short life is so enjoy it while you can. |

I would consider a few things, first of which would be your Dad's Comfort. This is a major trip and by the sounds of things he may be an Older Gentleman. Can he get in and out of the Camaro without too much problem? I know for me (Mid 50's) It is a very comfortable car for me and fits me very well. And the heated seats sure help on those days where I am stiff and sore also.
I would plan a little extra money just in case. Weather might set you back some days, or you may decide to stay someplace longer than you thought. Also, make the trip in such a way that it's not 12 hours in the car everyday. Take breaks, get out and look at things and enjoy the time together. I would have loved to have done this with my father, and I am sorry I never got the chance. Our family was know for some epic road trips with fully loaded Ford Country Squire Wagons in the 60's. Mom and Dad had great memories of those, I think us boys, cramped in the back with the gear thought not so much! LOL! |

If you have to ask then you already have concerns about making your Camaro last as long as possible. I am in the same boat, so to say, and I want to keep my Camaro around for as long as possible. The thing that swayed me to an SUV is that my dad is not that healthy and can't get in and out of my Camaro. It would be more painful for him to have to do so... BUT if he was full capable and it wouldn't bother him, I would take my Camaro just for the memories... The car should last plenty long these days anyhow. Its just a matter of deciding if you can deal with rock chips, scratches, lots of miles (ear-to-ear grinning miles), etc... She may not be perfect after the trip but she will still be around, barring anything terrible...

Thanks guys for all the great suggestions and feedback. My dad is 61 but acts and feels like 40 (at least that's the appearance he puts on). Barring anything cropping up between now and then, I'm sure he wouldn't have any problem riding in the car.
Hopefully, I still have several months to consider my options. Thanks again for all the feedback. Everyone gave good points going in either direction; so it's not really made my decision any easier. LOL But it's a nice decision to have to make. What ever I decide, I'll be sure to take a lot of pictures and post a few on here...especially if I take the Camaro!

Unless I had a car that was a lease, I would drive my own car.
Take the Camaro for the road trip man. I am actually thinking of doin the same next year. Imagine the pictures you could take with the different backdrops available at each location!

Don't let the mileage be your driver. Not just for this trip, but any time. I don't know how you could ever fully enjoy owning it if you were always worried about putting miles on the odometer.
If your dad will be comfortable in the Camaro...then it's a no-brainer. Drive the Camaro and it will be part of the memories you make. Better that than always looking back and feeling, "Man, that would've been cooler in the Camaro...". On the other hand, if it would be tough for him to get in and out all the time (it is for my dad), then go with the SUV. You'll never miss the Camaro if you know, up front, that it would ruin the trip for him. Cheers--and drive safe. Come back and post pics!

"....with my Dad."
As a Dad and Grandfather, I will honestly say that I would rather do a trip with my Son in a Camaro. That's all I had to read to give my thoughts. Great luck to you and your Dad. I honestly hope that you guys get to have the trip opportunity. -Ivan |
