Thanks, I will look into it

If you want to go to something like SCCA, I'd consider a Solstice GXP for the cost to performance ratio. They need some set up (which is inexpensive) but they have a really good SCCA record. Corvette's and Solstice GXP's are both class A cars though (I think) so you'd be thrown in with the big boys right away, and some of those guys are really really good.

I'd look for a class C or D car that's been pre-set up for half your budget for a year or 2 then upgrade when you're used to the format. Personally I only autocross though so I'm just going through what I hear at the events.

The SCCA events won't require the commitment Rogue Leader is talking about.
Yep, I see your point. And it's what I'd prefer to do in the first place. What exactly is a class c or d car?

And if it makes any difference in the long run, I'd prefer to get into rally racing then just running around a track for endless hours

Just google SCCA SOLO CLASSIFICATIONS, then look for the category by make listing.

C's are generally moderately powered rear drivers (like a non-turbo solstice). D's are generally front drivers. There's E's and F's too but those are usually older cars. SS class is Viper ACR's and Vette Z06s of the world. AS is normal Corvettes, Porsches, Loti, etc.

I don't know about rally's honestly. My club is a sponsor to 1 amateur rally event but they are very infrequent in the US to my knowledge- whereas the SCCA road course and autocross stuff has several local events every season in most metro areas.

Cars require some set up- but they are generally stock except for safety items. You can get into the modified classes too, but I wouldn't do that until you see what's going on. For example, a Mazdaspeed 3 owner I know switched to a higher pressure BOV and put on solid motor mounts and some other minor mods. He did just enough changes to throw him into 'modified'. So now his MS3 has to play with 500 hp EVO's. It's not pretty.

I stick to Autocross because I can't afford to hurt my car, some people get pretty dang serious about it though.

SOLO Classifications is actually wrong for road racing. You need to go to www.scca.com and look up club racing and it can show you that if thats the route you want to take. http://www.scca.com/hub.aspx?hub=1 for Club racing or http://www.scca.com/hub.aspx?hub=4 for SCCA Pro racing which includes Spec Miata.

As for Rally, if you've got money to spend its great, but Rally is not very big in America, theres 2 guys who make money doing it here and thats Travis Pastrana and Ken Block, and thats cause Ken started with a lot of money, and Travis transcends multiple sports. Ken will be the first American in the WRC in God knows how many years. Either way Rally is not a good way to make money, at least not here.

I am very interested in the skip barber racing school and actually want to attend some of their courses. I will also get/read the books that you have mentioned, hopefully they will have them at barnes&noble

I'm also ok with the word no being said to me... I'm in college lol
Ahh... bastard hehe JK

I see you're in NY, the closest place Skip Barber runs classes at is Limerock Park, CT... it is definitely the way to go. The head instructor is Bruce MacInnes and he is the man, I learned more from him in 3 days than I could ever learn in years. Hes really a great instructor.

Thanks for clarifying, like I said- I don't road race (I hang out in the kiddie-pool of the state fairgrounds parking lot with the other dweebs hehe). Looks like my D would be a T3.

I Autocrossed for many many years, the past couple I haven't, just kinda got tired of it. I was with the core group that set up the event, I ran Tech every event, etc. I got tired of being in a parking lot in the hot sun for 12 hours on a saturday or sunday for 5 minutes of racing. It can be fun, but if I ever went back to it, as much as I like my friends there, I would rather pay my $40-$50 and be able to leave when I'm done...

Yeh, that sounds good. I also see that they teach at sebring, which isn't that far from the tampa/sarasota/venice area, so that could work

Yeah they do, Sebring is a bit hairy though. Its a cool track don't get me wrong but theres a lot of bumps and uneven pavement, you will be fighting the track a lot. Less bumpy tracks are better for learning to be smooth. Smooth is fast.

Keep us posted on your progress and the cars you end up going with. Wish I had the means to get into professional racing
