I agree that the console-mounted gauge pod isn't a great feature in this car, but mainly because I know how dirty they're going to get. Don't bother changing your stereo's volume while holding a cup of coffee with your right hand. Can you imagine a spill on those things? Regardless, the important stuff like engine temperature and fuel gauge are still located in the main gauge cluster, right in front of the driver. And all of the warning lights are still located there also, so don't worry about that. But, if the torque gauge is gone, that sucks. That was a very cool "performance inspired" accessory, even if it would be under-used. How useful is a tranny temp gauge?? That's just a joke. I sincerely hope GM realizes this mistake and puts the torque meter back into the SS in future models.
Regarding the upper console, I'm stoked. I love how there is a plastic console, as it offers more storage and a better place to mount a radar detector instead of to the windshield with suction cups. And the flush sun visors look much better than I was expecting! |

If the console-mounted gauge pod is only an option, do the people who don't want the pod get no gauges? If they do, where exactly are the gauges located? |

Yes, the information they give is nice to know, but not necessary in the majority of people's day to day driving. |

Scott (FbodFather) had mentioned one late evening at the Gathering in Atlanta that the quad gauges might show duplicate info that would be displayed elsewhere. Of course this was several years ago so that may have changed by now.

The digital screen between the Speed-o and RPM gauge could very well handle the info that is in the pod. The review on the preproduction v6 shows gauge with oil pressure/oil temp/transmission temp and battery voltage. My wives Kia doesn't have any of those gauges, just warning lights if something is wrong with them. Most cars don't have the oil temp and trans temp gauges. So it is very probable that without the gauge pod, you will have the warning lights at the least and maybe with that digital area maybe some digital gauges to scroll through like on the DIC in most new GM vehicles you can scroll through miles/engine hours/tire pressure/etc.

There's no torque readout in these pics, but this was a preproduction car from months ago. Looking at the red LT/RS that was part of the unveiling, the torque gauge is part of the four-pack. The oil pressure gauge moved to the bottom right where the transmission temperature is in the Motor Trend picture.

All that really matters is the Oil Pressure gauge.
No or low oil pressure can cause THOUSANDS of dollars of damage in a FEW seconds, while most of the other critical functions(like cooling and fuel) take more time to do permanent damage and a fuel gauge is mostly for convenience(it's kinda inconvenient to run out of gas, but no huge repair bill)... Oil pressure is like the blood pressure of your car, it should always be monitored and we shouldn't have to turn our heads to do so... I have faith that the computer read-out on the Gen 5 will mimic the C4/C5/C6 digital displays, where you could toggle which information was displayed front and center. |

In all fairness with this picture, being taken from the back seat its perspective makes the view out front look much more narrow than it probably will be for the driver.
Also, I think the flush fitting visors look great. Those are the kinds of little details GM has been criticized for skimping on for years. I get the sense with this car that all the little things have been thought out and deliberately addressed. That is a very, very good thing. That's the kind of the that put the Japanese where they are today. Its the kind of thing that's letting me overlook the Camaro's size and weight and focus on its sheer goodness.

I like that view!
I'm looking forward to having the view from the drivers seat myself someday, soon! The interior looks great! As for the "buttons" above, I'm thinking one/or two for garage doors, one for ONSTAR, or Blue Tooth...

I wouldn't mind a pic from the front seat looking out the back window if anyone has seen such a thing.

OnStar buttons are on the mirror and the blue tooth is on the wheel I believe. I can see two buttons for a gate/garage homelink combo, but I can't think of what the third would be for. Maybe it hides the rear-view mirror away in case you get tired of looking at Mustangs, Challengers, and assorted other "competitors".

. But I'm confused, you looked at a Challenger and it made you second guess yourself on the Camaro?
