Same thing happen to me when I picked up my SS, I right away new the dealer put 87 octane gas it felt sluggish. Even though it was new it didn't feel right. As soon as it was quarter empty I put Chevron 91 and I felt the difference right away it sounded good and responded even better. I haven't tried any other gas 76,Mobil....., not sure if I will, but I am a little curious to try Shell. Bottom line try 87 then 91 or higher octane and you will hear and feel the difference.

You act as if GM doesn't try all possible scenarios when testing pre-productions. You guys can all continue to say that the SS only uses 91 or up, but that is completely false. Enjoy arguing! ![]() That is a no-brainer, there is less ethanol, 4% less. New engines don't show the same difference, most of them are able to handle E85 for example, which is essentially 15 octane.

What do you mean by 15 octane? Are you trying to say that it is 15% gasoline, because that is correct. Actually E85 has a higher octane rating, 105-110, because pure ethanol has about a 115 octane rating using the (R+M)/2 method.

I have nothing useful to add to this discussion. I just wanted to let 2ndgenz28 know your comments are absolutely entertaining!
I use high octane gas because I bought an SS for performance, I have a Civic for fuel economy/poor performance!!

I went with the dealer on first fill. Insisted they put premium in.
By theway, the difference here between standard and premium is about 12c. 60lts x .12 = about $6. Come oon, if a dealer want to be that cheap over a sale of a Camaro, they aint gonna be in business very long.

could be gas from a "cold" state like NY/NJ we add ethanol in the winter ...that would run poorly in Florida....just something to consider.

There is a difference in gas. There is a market for crude oil and another for light-sweet crude oil. The light sweet is more refined and has less crap in it. That is what is used for top tier or premium gas. Age of tank and reputation for not substituting regular for premium is what should keep you coming back to any particular station IMHO.

Only in the winter? Hell in Minnesota we add 10% to all gas regardless of season and are lobbying to increase to 15% (and I believe that's nationwide to decrease dependence on foreign oil) Guess it pays to work for a design-build firm that's built 45% of the nation's ethanol plants. ![]() But yeah, ethanol is high octane so there shouldn't even be a discussion to whether ethanol is detrimental to engines. Oh! And for a side note, my '94 Z28 didn't like low octane gas. It lived and breathed premium. |

![]() It's NOT gonna hurt your engine to run low octane. You'll just get your a$$ handed to you by every GT Pony who you try. PLUS, the LTs and LS will give you a run for your money. I paid the extra money for the SS to run the car like an SS. If you're plan is to allways run low grade fuel and never mod the car, you should buy the V6. |
