Be careful with a used cam. Once the cam has been installed with lifters they create a wear pattern. Changing that pattern can result in losing a lobe. It's just like if you use his existing lifters you have to put them in you car the way they came out of his to continue the same wear pattern. Same rule applies with used cam vs new lifters. It might be 6 weeks or 6 months but it will happen. If it were me I would buy a new cam and not have to worry about it instead of buying a used cam and losing a lobe, then having to buy a new cam.

He said it had very little use... I haven't asked for further clarification yet. If it was set up right then there is probably very little wear, if any.

Regardless of setup there will still be the wear. This type of thing has happened since the beginning of time. Some may say they have never had that problem but for a new cam that is $400 max I would go with new just to be on the safe side. Im real big when it comes to certain part for cars that i will absolutely not buy used and a cam is one of them. Hopefully the same wont happen to you and everything will go smooth.

Ask Yourself this.....

Are you willing to do the Job again if need be?

If the answer is yes by all means take a gamble and use a used cam. I also will bet every time you mash the pedal and drive hard that used cam is gonna be in your mind and have you hearing things.....

I'd do the job again in a minute, but... I have to agree with your bet. I'm already paranoid enough.

I need to get another actuator on top of the one I already found. Anyone have another one? I have to be able to unspring one so I can measure PTV at full retard.

When it comes to my way of thinking and my dad was a mechanic for 30+ years so that has alot to do with....

I won't buy used moving parts as example, camshaft, lifters, springs, pushrods, crankshaft, rods, and pistons among other things. There is always the chance that everything will go smooth, but I think of all the problems that can occur if they don't. Now I will buy a used intake manifold or throttle body and things of that sort, but that is about my extent.

This is another good VVT thread for anyone interested. I was unclear at best about checking PTV clearance with the VVT setup. This cleared up a lot of gray area for me.

I remember that, sweets10v8 has taught me a lot along the way over the years.

I have bought and installed used cams before. Back at some point it was a no no. But these days I have no problem with used cams. It isn't like people are taking them to batting practice. And it isn't like they have 50,000 or even 20,000 miles on them. Heck I've installed used OEM cams that have had over 80,000 miles on them. You can always get a micrometer and check the specs...I do that even with new cams. Careful examination is always a must with any part. I've had used cranks, rods, pistons...if something is wrong with it, you will know just from looking at it.

Like I said some people might not have any problems with them but its not a risk I'm willing to take. You can't always notice something that might break/grind off x amount of miles later....
How much life/miles were you able to get out of said used cams ect.?

I agree. It's just something about re-using used valvetrain parts that doesn't sit right with me. Whether someone babied their cammed car, or beat the crap out of it with oil that didn't have a higher ZDDP content, I'm not willing to take that chance.
