Chevrolet announced the ZL1 in early February 2011 stating that it would have an LSA engine with at least 550 horsepower. The LSA in the ZL1 makes 4.3 percent more horsepower than the LSA does in the CTS-V, which is in line with expectations. The 650 horsepower GT500 was announced in November 2011, nine months after the ZL1, with its LSA engine, was announced. Therefore, Ford, with the information available in February 2011, had nine months to build up the GT500 to 650 horsepower.

Ford did. ZL1 didn't exist, but they built a 650hp car. The curent GT500 has been around since 2007MY and it is no secret that the 5.4 is easy to hop up on hp and the 2011 and 2012 SVT-PP GT500s posted excellent roadcourse times (better than M3 and CTS-V). GM knew all this.

I said it many times over a year ago when people where proclaiming that the GT500 was the benchmark to beat and the ZL1 will kick its arse, I said many times, it would be difficult to hit a moving target. GM shoulda used the GS or Z06 or ZR1 as the benchmark, not the GT500. The GT500, per SVT, used the Ford GT as their benchmark and they were "forced" to build a better/faster GT500 because the Boss 302 was close enough to blur the line between them. So far, SVT claims the new GT500 is a better roadcourse car than the Ford GT.
Meh, at the end of the day, when I get my ZL1, know what it is and what I can expect from it, and I won't feel disappointed. Someone, something will always be faster.

I understand your point. But at that time, who knew it was only going to be 580? GM coulda thrown a bigger blower, bored it out bit, etc. Ford used the existing 5.4, bored it out a bit and replaced the blower with a bigger TVS. It isn't like Ford thew in a completely different engine making 650hp. Okay, to your argument...so now that GM knows Ford has 650hp, do you think they'll bump the LSA to 680hp?

It's not anything to do with passion -- its all about my observations from all the magazine reviews who basically stated the ZL1 is a generation ahead of Dearborn. Times will be close, but this isn't horseshoes (or is it pony shoes?)

GM knew about the 650HP ford before we did, I knew this would come up. Problem was........GM had no motor to counter with in the parts bin.
Whoever decided to name the car ZL-1 should be fired. Bad move!!

This car should have been the Z-28 to compete and blow out the BOSS, not take on a 13 GT500. Car should have been priced around 47K and it would have been a win/win. Remember the ZL1 is supposed to be the cream of the crop. Throw in the ZR1 motor from the vette and charge 75K and thats your real ZL1.

Based on Nurburgring times, the ZL1 is a better road course car than a 2005 Z06, similar to how the GT500 is claimed to be a better road course car than the Ford GT.

Nope, the 2005 z06 was run from a standing start, not like today where the clock starts at speed....

Good question. I don't know if GM can bump the LSA to 680 horsepower while still providing warranty, without changes to the internals. The LS9, or a new engine, might be required for that kind of warrantied horsepower, which would change the price point.

Also -- Unless the top Corvette gets an HP bump, I doubt we'll see a factory 680HP Camaro -- even with an LS9 at the heart -- also, I don't foresee anyone paying the price on that powerplant either, well, at least enough to merit GM actually making the thing.

So that means the 13 GT500 should beat the Ford GT, 2005 Z06, and the ZL1.

In that case it should be clearly noted, or there should be two separate lists, instead of showing the 7:41 of the ZL1 and the 7:49 of the Z06 on the same list, as it can be misleading.

7 years in tire development is a lot. You take the same car, same driver, in the same conditions, wearing today's tires, do you think the time will improve? You betcha!

Has the 2013 GT500 posted a faster standing start Nurburgring time than the 2005 Z06?
