I can tell you why I do this. It's for my safety in the event someone tries to jack me at a stop light. The gap gives me room to accelerate and get away from my attacker. The other reason has to do with rear-end collisions. If I get hit from behind by some moron, I am not shoved into the rear of the car in front if I leave a space.
