Oh yeah, I'm not going to do a color change. I still like the yellow the best. Just figured I would do the stripes as the deck lid was getting paint as part of the repair and the front fascia needs repaint from chips and parking lot pigs. So basically I get charged for the hood and the fascia on my dime.

I asked them to take some progress pics, so I will post those when/if I get them.

Getting a Makeover

So I stopped by the body shop to see the repair progress on my H&R damage. This is what I found.

I chatted with the body shop manager and the fellow doing the work. They were both surprised that I wanted to see the car in mid-repair. I told them I wanted it documented.

The rear quarter panel is actually huge. Open your door and you will see that the panel above the door window actually continues down the A pillar, is the door sill, then basically goes back underneath the skin at the rear "quarter panel" area. And it is all welded to the frame, so no easy task to remove the damaged section. A cut at the mid point on the B pillar, then some serious work with an air chisel to get the rest off. They told me the cost to replace the entire panel is exorbitant, so insurance companies will only pay for the patch work. :(

The door skin is actually attached with some kind of glue, according to the body shop, FYI.

And there was hidden damage, so they had to file a supplemental claim and the adjuster will be out next week to see for himself.

The guy doing the work also mentioned the vibration he felt when moving the vehicle. He was concerned that it was more hidden damage. I told him that was the solid engine mounts. After a few minutes, I made the call to pull them and put the factory mounts back in. I will be posting the Pfadt mounts for sale on here when I recover them.

The manager made a point of letting me know the stripes were important to him to get right and we discussed the deck lid. They are going to paint the blackout stripe on the back of the lid. No more vinyl!!!

I am excited to see it finished.

Looks good. What are they asking for $$$ on the stripe package. I just got a quote form a local guy $800-$1,000 and thats keeping the transformers hologram.

Keep putting up pics.

They quoted me $800 for front/rear stripes, but that was a bit discounted, since they were painting the deck lid anyhow for the damage repair. I also had them repaint the front fascia (I curbed it in a parking lot early on, before I knew where the front end was.) and they are going to extend the stripes onto the fascia (front) and over the spoiler (rear). I debated doing a straight stripe or tapered in the front and finally went with a tapered, but to the same width as the vinyl, so there will be a more gradual taper overall, clear as mud?

And I am returning to the factory engine mounts to get rid of the resonation, which is driving me crazy.

All that was $1500 and change, plus tax.

I have included my poor attempt at photo shop, with the fronts thinner on the fascia than what I spoke to the shop about.

***edit*** no Transformer two tone on the paint. I have purchased a vinyl set to add on top of the stripes. The paint guys did not seem too confident about getting that right, so I told them not to worry about it. The vinyl was on e-bay for about $10.

...a little closer...

...to completion of the repair work. I am amazed at what has to go into this thing to make it right, or as close to right as it can ever be. It came out of the paint shop today, back to the body shop, then once it is back together, back to the paint shop for the stripes. According to the shop, it should be complete the middle of next week.

Sorry to hear about the damage to your car. Atleast its getting fixed! I am seriously jealous of the PFADT upgrade... Did you do the stage 4? Do you feel for the money it was worth it. This is a mode I want to do as well. Great journal

There is an advertiser (AdSense) on this forum with the extended stripes you're talking about:

http://www.ridergraphix.com/Camaro.html

Hope that helps!

I have the stage piecemeal...I just bought the parts as I could afford them and when they went on special. The only complaint I have is the engine mounts really make the AFM all but intolerable. I am having the shop swap back to the OEM ones while the repairs are underway. If you have the M6, the mounts will probably not bother you at all. Other than that, I am happy with the Pfadt upgrades.

Thanks for reading the journal!

Thanks. The bumblebee extended version on that page is similar to what I will end up with, hopefully. My wife and I decided we liked the tapered look, so they will taper to the same width as the OEM, but the ends will be down in front of the mail slot, close to the factory crease. At least that is what I told the stripe guy to do. I bought just the Transformer lettering in vinyl, so I can put it back on the painted stripe, if I decide to. We'll see how it looks when they are done. Hope to be finished early next week.
