You never know how good that horsepower is until you need it....especially in the case of an emergency... granted, it's not for everyone, but still...

As far as speed, most places are up to 65-70 nowadays on the freeway....and most people are running 70-75 anyways.... at that speed, extra ponies can make a difference, if you care about that...

As for the ego part, I absolutely disagree. For me, I didn't want to spend a bunch more money to have a car feel faster or go a bit faster... I wanted to buy one I didn't need to really do that with. I got one... As for extra insurance cost, the only reason my insurance went up was because it was a brand new car....and that was only $24 over a 6 month period...

I'll go for a SS when I can afford the lower MPG and premium requirement on top of my monthly payments. :p

That said, I REALLY want a SS. I just can't afford the extra go go juice. >.<

Oh, make no bones about it... V8 power is DEFINITELY an EGO trip, and I want one too!! At 46, I figure I'm due for an ego trip like this one.

Because I'd rather put the 7k for a turbo/super into my yearly trips overseas. (Although this year I sort of nixed that by dropping a 4k down payment onto my Camaro.)

I disagree with you, all those ponies are just about an ego trip, Heck I want to go on that trip, but atleast I can admit that no one needs more then 300hp in a daily driver. For the most part it's just a bragging right to friends and internet buddies. Most people don't care there is a Cobra stuck next to them in traffic with 600hp, going the same speed as the smart car

yep yep, like everything else in life, it is nicer to have more, whether you need the extra or not. Just for Ego Trip bs , why many with less HP keep spending $ to get more hp? Their ego is small and want it bigger?

No it with everything in life, Keeping up with the Jones'. We all have a camaro, yet we all want to make them better whether speed or looks, but to say that extra ponies is anyting but ego, is not being real, you know this,

My last car was a supercharged V6 FWD auto. I was hoping one day an affordable V8 RWD manual would hit the market. Along comes the Camaro with everything I had hoped for. After taking the test drive I took possession of my SS the day before my 49th birthday. Had it only been available in an auto, V6, or FWD I wouldn't have bought one. We all have our reasons and ego had nothing to do with my choice. I THINK it may have had something to do with owning the 72 Chevelle when I was 16. I loved the feel and sound of the V8 with blackjack headers and their glasspacks. For me it is just a list of things I love all rolled up into one.

Of course their has always been the debate of the SS being the true muscle car, and the V6 has always seemed to be frowned upon. Although I love my V6, and it has plenty of power and is really fun, I always have thoughts of wanting the V8 power...

Well today I was at the dealership cause my dad got the new 2011 2500 HD, which is a beast by the way, so I decided just to test drive a SS that was on the lot while I was there.

It was a automatic, fully loaded 2011 SS/RS, IOM, with IOM interior, and upgraded 21" wheels. Since mine is a loaded 2LT and upgraded 20" wheels the interior and luxury was no different than what I have. Heres a few things I noticed...

-HUD was awesome, it was late afternoon and sun was right in my face, and the HUD was still completely visible and wasn't blurry, very nice!
-Suspension. I could tell a very big difference in the suspension. It was a lot stiffer and harder than my car. It had a lot more of a racy feel too it which was cool though.
-Brakes. Wow, the Brembos felt awesome. I could barely tap the brake pedal and the car started to brake. Very smooth feeling.
-Engine. Even though it's the auto, I was blown away with the torque and power. At each shift it would push you back in the seat. Cruising at about 35, and going to WOT it did feel like my car for a split second, then all of a sudden it just hit a whole other level. I then put it in sport mode and that was a whole different ball game. At the light, 0-60 was in the blink of an eye.

Mid way through driving I said "Uh oh, this was a mistake!" I now have the fever, haha. I was very impressed and it was a bad aSS ride. Not to mention that crisp V8 rumble. I reached a new type of permagrin

All in all I still love my car! I do plan on getting a SS someday, and after driving one today I can't wait!

Go for the SS but the LAST place I would ever buy a car from is Phelps! I bought my 2010 from there and will never go back. I got my 2011 in Goldsboro from CCOG, it's an hour drive but worth it.

Listen to the little voice in the back of your head, "Get the V8, get the V8!" I don't know anyone who regretted getting the V8.

Actually no. There is no such thing as enough HP when u are a car fanatic, car nuts will tell you this. It is just a matter of what is the best available option that we can get to build on. Sure, for some maybe it is ego but I for one, if there were no V8 Camaro then I would have bought the best trim V6 with the same hp. I am not rich but if I can afford the best of the offerings, then that is what I get. If you really think the extra HP is purely ego, then I guess most of us here, V8 and V6 alike, are a bunch of egotistical people because we all are trying to get more HP, aren't you? But I respect your point of view.
