It's because the executives, like so many that run large corporations, have absolutely NO IDEA what the general population's taste in their products are. Since they are so uncertain and it takes SO MUCH money to make a major motion picture they are in most cases unwilling to take the risk on an unknown.
There are many more, but here are some prime examples: AMERICAN GRAFFITTI: All major studios rejected it, Universal finally relented, but when it was pre-screened hated it and didn't want to release it at all. Turned out to be a HUGE success and one of the most profitable movies of all time. BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID: Hated the fact that it wasn't a traditional western and thought it was actually insane to use modern music in the soundtrack (Raindrops keep fallin' on my head,,,). Went on the be the highest grossing film of the year and won many awards here and internationally, some for it's soundtrack. STAR WARS Episode IV A NEW HOPE: (From Wikipedia) "Both United Artists and Universal passed on their options for the film later that year, citing the risk involved in the project's potentially high budget. Lucas pursued Alan Ladd, Jr., the head of 20th Century Fox, and in June 1973 closed a deal to write and direct the film." In Fox's defense they did like the film in prescreening (A first for Lucas! Without the success of his American Graffitti it may never had been made). Fox was reluctant to spend any money marketing it and Lucas had to go elsewhere to seek funds for marketing the film. It's initial release was limited as theaters were reluctant to screen it, FOX had to leverage the theaters where it first was shown to help protect their investment. Well we know how that one turned out, surpassed JAWS and for quite some time was the highest grossing film of all time, won mutliple academy awards etc., etc. What the movie executives do know: They can keep churning out movies like FAST AND FURIOUS, TRANSFORMERS, and remake after remake. Sure they won't be blockbusters or the highest grossing films, but millions will pay to see them and they will be profitable and of little risk finacially. (Imagine what those UA and Universal execs thought a few years after STAR WARS came out, DOOOHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!Another fun tidbit. In order to placate the exec and get the movie made Lucas offered to waive most of his share of the profits and instead own exclusive marketing rights, they thought what a RUBE and let him have them. Let's see marketing profits to date for STAR WARS, around $700 MILLION) Last edited by MLL67RSSS; 08-22-2011 at 08:01 AM. |

hey i like the way you think.
some of the movies listed here are not remakes actually. Superman Returns for instance was meant as a continuation of Superman I and II. Still weird that Spiderman is getting the origin remade just 10 years after the original. Footloose i don't get. They're actually using the original songs...with new singers. And they've basically reshot the original exactly the same. And how believable is that storyline now? i mean it made more sense in 1984 that there was a town like that compared to 2011.
