Freshman year of college; I wash in my dorm room in Austin getting ready for class when my dad called me on my cell phone and told me to turn on the news.

Everything was cancelled and we were put on lock down for the day. I've never had so many emotions run through my head all at once.

I was in school, 8th grade. Heard about it during P.E. while we were running around outside, the rest of the day was spent watching it.

I still didnt quite understand it until I went home, we had just moved and my dad and I were assembling a desk in my room while it was on tv.

I started crying when he told me that the spots near the building on tv were people jumping 100 floors down because theyd rather do that then stay in the smoke and flames.

Definitely had some nightmares, and will never get those poor people out of my head.

I was active-duty Air Force at Minot AFB, ND. We were in the middle of a nuclear generation exercise, and had our entire fleet of B-52H's loaded to the gills with nuclear ALCM's!!!! When they couldn't find that last aircraft (the one that went down in PA), it was scary as hell to suddenly realize that our base would have made one hell of a target at the time!!!! Needless to say, the "exercise" was immediately cancelled, and preparations were initiated to deploy our aircraft immediately!!! It was scary and exciting all at the same time. It amazes me to hear from all these young people on the forum who were in grade school at the time. It's hard for me to grasp the fact that this happened 12 years ago....still seems like yesterday.

May God Bless every innocent life that was lost. Never Forget!!!

I was changing my sons diaper when we heard something come over the radio that said "looks like something out of a movie" and then a few minutes later the second tower was hit. I went to work at what was then Compaq Computer (now HP) and ended up leaving to grab my son from daycare at noon. We watched TV the rest of the day and then that night we had my wife's family over for dinner. Just a reminder to us to hold the ones we love close!

That is interesting. I had a buddy that at the time was a B-52 pilot stationed at Barksdale AFB. I don't know if they were also involved in that exercise but when I spoke to him a couple months later he told me that they were loaded with canned sunshine and took to the air. Ended up at Diego Garcia for a few weeks.

On September 10th 2001 I broke my back in a boating accident. Fortunately I didn't damage my spinal cord or drown. However, the pain was the worst I had ever felt. It hurt to stand, sit or lie down. I didn't sleep much that night and was pretty out of it come the morning of the 11th. I discovered that sitting in my computer chair and supporting my upper body with my elbows and the chair's arms brought some relief. I had a TV tuner card in my PC and decided to put on the news. The pain meds were heavy duty synthetic opioid type and had me nodding off into unconsciousness throughout the day. At one point after the first building was hit, I passed out. When I came to I had to ask my wife if I was dreaming or hallucinating what had happened. Sadly she told me I was not hallucinating. :(

Yes, Barksdale was involved in that exercise too....we played "games" at both bases simultaneously!!! We didn't put any of our birds to the sky that day....but we were all told to be ready to launch at any time. Once the initial shock was over, we were told to download all weapons and start pre-flighting for deployment. I LOVED DIEGO GARCIA!!!!

At work. I had a small TV in my office & so I had a lot of people in there. Turned it on just in time to see the second tower hit. Went to our church that night for a prayer meeting.

Called a few of our clients in NJ (hospitals) and talked to some of the workers who were watching it live from their windows & top of the hospital. They were waiting for the injured to show up. A few weeks later I was in NJ and talking to a building one survivor - could still hear the shock in his voice.

Edit: We live near the Kansas City airport so I'm used to seeing condensation trails all around our house. That afternoon, along with the next day or so, I remember how clear the sky was & knowing that if I saw one it was for our military.

I was on the tarmack in Frankfurt Germany awaiting a flight home. The pilot came on and said someting wasn't right and we were going to sit for a bit. They turned on the movie and opened the bar..... I knew we would be there a while.

2 hours later the pilot came on and said we were headed back to the terminal, and that all US citizens would be escorted to the United counter, he ended the announcement with Gold bless you and your families...... none of us knew what was going on.

When we returnede to the terminal it was full out on. Automatic weapons, body armor, that airport was not messing around. I was the first to the United counter and they had my wife on the phone waiting for me, SHE told me what was going on. The people behind me saw the tears in my eyes and I explained what she had told me. The whole line started to weep and worry.

I was in germany for what seemed eternity, going to the airport everymorning, getting turned away and then going to my office in Alzenau.

I was on one of the first flights allowed back in to US airspace, it was an extremely somber flight and still people were in disbelief. When we got to customs, it tooks several hours to clear, security was nuts, but every person came togetehr and we all waited patiently.... again a very somber day.

Air travel changed that day, I was a weekly traveller, and after that day I came off the road. I did not personally know anyone lost in this tragedy but have know a few brave souls who have died since then defending my freedom.

God bless the troups that keep me safe today!!!!
God Bless the families who lost love ones 12 years ago.
