Negligible. This "definition" - which is in and of itself meaningless because it was created by people to serve a specific purpose - is entirely out of context. By that definition, the Camaro is in the same class as a Malibu. Is there any publication on Earth that would do a comparison between a Camaro and a Malibu and maintain any kind of credibility? Whether or not they are both "compacts" by government GVWR standards does not change the fact they are not in anything close to similar classes. Rating a ZL1 on fuel economy is silly because they were not engineered with fuel economy in mind and no one on Earth is buying them for their fuel efficiency. It is like me rating a pizza place's pizza by how many pets the owner has. Who cares?

It's not meaningless. Whether you like it or not this is the way they are classified by the EPA. The published article is entirely different. Typical media crap of sensationalism for a story. I see no mention of the other cars that scored just as bad in the article. I don't see them complaining about the Rolls-Royce Phantom which is the other worst "compact car". I'm sure the buyer of the Phantom could care less about the rating. And I don't give a rat's ass about it either. Typical media trying to stir crap up. Who cares?

And it's not out of context. This is exactly where they got their story from.

It's not meaningless because that it how they come up with the ZL1 owing the gas guzzler. I bet they go by class. If we were in a class closer to weight I bet we would have a lower tax.

Why didn't the article focus on the fact that there was only ONE U.S. car on the list? The big "3" should be proud that they only have one car on the list.

I bet they tried different formulas for class calculation and this one generated the most revenue.

It looks as if the gas guzzler tax is based entirely on mileage regardless of size.

http://www.epa.gov/fueleconomy/guzzler/420f12068.pdf

Tax Schedule
The IRS collects the tax directly from the manufacturer or importer of the vehicles. The following
table shows the gas guzzler tax rates which have been in effect since January 1, 1991. The
manufacturer or importer must pay this amount for each vehicle that doesn’t meet the minimum
fuel economy level of 22.5 mpg.

Combined fuel economy of:
Amount
at least 22.5 mpg No tax
at least 21.5, but less than 22.5 mpg $1000
at least 20.5, but less than 21.5 mpg $1300
at least 19.5, but less than 20.5 mpg $1700
at least 18.5, but less than 19.5 mpg $2100
at least 17.5, but less than 18.5 mpg $2600
at least 16.5, but less than 17.5 mpg $3000
at least 15.5, but less than 16.5 mpg $3700
at least 14.5, but less than 15.5 mpg $4500
at least 13.5, but less than 14.5 mpg $5400
at least 12.5, but less than 13.5 mpg $6400
less than 12.5 mpg $7700

That's much fairer if they do it that way, I could live with that. I still don't get the EPA classes, it must have got some beancounter a promotion.

"ZL1 - worst gas guzzling compact car"

LMAO The best $1,300 in guzzler tax I have spent in years! I'm hoping in Gen6 they have one that cost $2,600!
