I'm from the lowly SS side of the forum but I too changed the "break in" oil at about 900 miles. There was simply no way I was running the initial oil to 7500 miles. I also have to agree - to a degree, about the damage being done once metal gets in the system. But on a microscopic level, doesn't that happen all day, every day? Hence, changing oil. Often!

Same here. Lowly SS owner. Did my first change at 900 miles. It really amazes me that manufacturers recommend running a full cycle before the first oil change. Every engine I have owned, be it a car, motorcycle, or lawn mower has gotten an early 1st oil change. It's cheap insurance.

That's because it's "old school" and people follow what has been told to them. It's not a bad idea to appease the OCD in some of us, but I have never done it on any of my cars after initially doing it at around 700 miles on new vehicle many years ago. The technological advances with synthetic oil are many and have changed quite a bit since the 70's when Penzoil and Valvoline were "name brands" to use. How many threads are there stating my brand new engine was destroyed by leaving the oil in until the recommended change? It's strange that most follow the "1500 mile" break in procedure with no problem at all, but seem to know more than the engineers that have run the car and tested it's maximum capability prior to releasing it.

Went back to the Dealership yesterday and went over all the parts with the Mechanic. It appears the motor was eating itself (my opinion). But without tearing into the Short Block assembly which I cannot since the Motor has to go back I can only speculate.

The #6 Piston is completely gone a long with the Intake Valve Head. The Valve Stem moves freely. So what I am thinking is as the motor consumed itself metal particles caused a Lifter to stick hanging the intake valve open and wham knocked the head off the Valve breaking the Piston. The Wrist Pin was still in the Rod. I certainly hope we can get some feedback.

Everything from the Air Cleaner to the Cats was replaced. They did not want to take a chance having any stray metal left in any lines or Induction System contaminating the new Engine.

There was never any question or debate from "GM Management" or the Dealership if it was going to be covered. No question what so ever. The Mechanic was in constant contact with GM Tech and they addressed everyone of his concerns without hesitation and sent him whatever he felt necessary to put the Motor back to as original as it could be.

My hat is off to all involved at GM and the Dealership to make my Z whole again.
That is fantastic customer service. It is the same type of experience I received from my dealership when I had a strange issue. They replaced all the parts in question and great communication. Glad to hear you had the same experience. ,Sam.
