I believe that once you hit a certain age you should have to take the road test again. I see far to many elderly people driving car that are far to big, because it makes them feel safe and they just can't drive them. My mom is 73 and will not let her drive my kids, her reaction time has gotten slow and it concerns me. She has had minor incidents were she has bumped into things as I see new damage on her vehicle every few months and she always says she didn't do it. One time she had my car and took out a neighbors mailbox

Not saying the ages should be changed or a maximum driving age should be set, just pointing that out. There should be regular recert tests every X amount of years, or after you reach age X. Good drivers like your autocross guy will carry on, and the dangers to public safety, regardless of age, will be taken off the road.
It's easier to determine and set a "close enough" minimum age for when driving may start than come up with an equitable age for when retesting to continue driving should perhaps start. There are people less capable as drivers at age 55 than my own father was at 85 (he continued to drive under a daylight-only restriction up to within two weeks of his passing at age 91, and was still rated as a 'safe' driver by his insurance company at that time). My point being that coming up with a threshhold age as the sole basis for retesting would be considerably more difficult. Some formula considering age plus things like violations/license points and accident insurance claims, with credit for driving classes and/or other verifiable demonstration of skills . . . now that might work.

In Illinois I believe they do require drivers to prove they are still competent to drive. 80+ maybe. I'm 53 now and there's no way I will ever stop driving....short of being thrown in jail.

The problem with legislatively implementing a system for testing 'older' drivers, is that perception that it would be discriminating against what is considered a protected class. This would never fly with AARP and the ACLU, I'd hate to be the politician that even suggested it, lol.

The way around that is to test everybody on a periodic basis. You could legislate skill testing everyone upon renewal, however the logistics would be a nightmare, especially in larger cities.

She's an old lady, give her a freaking break. That could easily be our moms or grandmothers so we all should be a bit more compassionate. Thankfully no one was seriously injured and your car can be repaired or replaced.

I hope you offered to help her because the elderly woman in the photos looks horrified? I was hit by an elderly man years ago and I can proudly say I didn't get pissed off. I actually helped him with his insurance, as well as contacting family and getting his car off the street. It was a huge pain in the ass getting my car repaired but I always felt a sense of pride for not blowing up at that elderly man when he was clearly distressed over the situation.

Sometimes it pays off to respond with compassion instead of anger. Just sayin'.

Great answer! Driving is a privilege, not a Right! Most drivers on the road should not have a license - and if they didn't, it would give me more room to open it up!

My Mom was a Great Driver and was even good after she came down with Alzheimer's (my sister should have taken away the Keys - I was 1,200 Miles away). My Mom was even driving the 38' Motorhome. I finally had to take the Car & Keys away from her - I never saw someone so sad!

Like I said. Only lucky she didn't kill a bunch of people. What if she took out someone important to you? Happens all the time. You might not be so forgiving.

According to the Department of Transportation, several hundred people are killed each year by drivers over the age of 70 who “don’t know their ass from their elbow.”

Nobody got pissed at the scene and her husband showed up immediately to help her after she denied help from the ambulance.

I am more frustrated than anything. If the car is not totalled then I end up having a car with a car fax that is going to kill any value it did have. The whole situation just sucks!

I am very glad that she did not kill anyone or herself and it was good that the doctor was not seeing anyone that day. The vehicle she hit in the street that turned in as well the driver almost got out of the car and if she would of that would have been the end to her as she would have been standing in the path of destruction!

Hope they total it for you. I would be sick if that happened to mine. :(

Wow that is nasty. Sorry for your situation. As you can see my car could be a twin to yours. I would be sick to find mine in a similar situation.

Then again, it is just a machine and can be replaced
