Ok, slightly off topic, painting the mufflers? I have those hideous suitcase things and they stick out like a sore thumb. High-temp flat black rattle-can?

As for the chrome trim to flat black: will the flat black be difficult to clean like our vinyl stripes?

themossman, thank you for giving us the info on how to de-chrome and paint the trim rings. I did mine today and it turned out great!

the Dupi-Color flat black spray paint is the best spray can I've ever used.

I ended up using high-temp rattle can flat black on my mufflers and they don't stick out quite as ugly now...

I just finished painting the back light tail rings.

I tried using Easy off oven cleaner but that didn't work so I went with the 600 grit sandpaper. Also used the Duplicolor adhesion promoter and flat black as mentioned by an earlier poster.

To remove the round black tabs to access the back of the tail rings you need to pop up the round button part. I used two small flat head screwdrivers and gently pried up on opposite sides. Once the small button part is up you can remove the enitre tab.

As mentioned earlier the tail rings are held in by six tabs so go easy and gentle to prevent breaking them since they are plastic. I had my daughter who has small hands help get the hard to reach tabs.

All in all an easy and satisfying modification.

I'm glad you can pass along the 'don't waste your time with Easy Off'...that sounded pretty pointless, but I didn't have experience... Sandpaper is quick and easy.

Glad it worked out for you!

Well it wasn't a total waste.

My wife can now clean our nasty oven!

Gloss AND Flat looked great but I wonder if Rally Yellow would look ok?
