one piece trunk and spoiler I saw at SEMA

Hey guys, I saw a one piece trunk and spoiler combo that I saw at SEMA that I really liked but I lost their info. Does anyone know who this might be? I believe it was steel so I don't think it was www.seiboncarbon.com they have a nice unit but I wanted to compare it to the other one. Anyone have any ideas?

Couldn't get the car in time to do the pics so we just moved forward in production so as to not hold it up...

Had a bunch of valance orders which has slowed my glass guy down but I hope to have a production piece Monday after Turkey Day...

I have a local guy who can paint them but he's expensive. It will be an option though.

Ok, so here's where we are at... We tooled the mold for the plug just so we could have a fresh fiberglass piece to make tweaks to. Popped the first one out of the mold and here's what she looks like on the car...

There are a couple of small issues (moving a bolt hole 1/8", etc...) BUT I'm at a stand still on this right now.

Basically, I don't make my stuff in China, I get it made here in the USA. That being said, injection molding isn't an option for us price wise (we don't have $20,000 to drop into a spoiler). SO, our guy literally has about 5 molds that he made (for different parts of this one piece) that go into producing this one spoiler.

That being said, to make a 10% profit I'm looking to sell these at $450 ($500 on ebay).

BECAUSE OF THAT, I don't know if I'm going to move forward with this. That is a LOT of money for a spoiler when you can get Chinese spoilers for $200-$300.

I would have to put another $1000-$2000 in getting this spoiler tweaked, a new mold made and a production piece for testing again and then my cost per piece is so high I'd have to sell for $450 and again, that's actually a little less than 10% profit.

Would anyone even buy this thing? Also, since I'm tweaking it anyway, I could go ahead and just make it extend to the quarters... Thoughts?

I'll give you kudos for effort. This car has an incredibly sophisticated, sculpted body that's fiendishly difficult to enhance or add-on. Only about 3 out of all the cars at SEMA looked good; all the others failed in the looks department because of that.

Look at that last pic; it looks like you set a concrete parking space block on the trunk. It's too thick and blocky looking. It might have worked for a 1st gen where the body panels where squarish and flat but not this car.

The ends are too tall compared to the center. Look at pics 1 and 2; the top of the spoiler should follow the curves of the base of the rear window. The spoiler is way too thick; need to be about 3/4" thinner.

I've attached 3 images where I place yellow lines on your spoiler to illustrate what I'm talking about. Notice how following the flow of the curve at the base of the rear window makes the top of the spoiler fit the lines of the car better. Especially from the back view where you can see the top matches the lines of the bottom of the trunk.

This entire car is nothing but curves; there's hardly a straight or flat surface on it anywhere. Think curves and sculpting. Notice how from the back the base of the rear window looks straight, but from the top and side it's anything but straight. The car is all curves; your spoiler needs to match that style philosophy in order for it to look like it fits the car.

I agree on 1/3 of the changes you're talking about. The top line, looking from the front of the car, has a wave that needs addressed. The back looks AMAZING in person though.

The line you drew would look really odd in person because the spoiler slants out (rakes away from the car). The pic makes it look weird but with the adjustments you're talking about it would REALLY look like a parking stop.

It DEFINITELY looks more parking stop like in pics but in person the curves (the concave shape, the extra lines, the swoop back, the overhang) all make it so you would never think that.

The blocky corners however are what made me think of extending it to the edges. They are just to tall and abrupt and make too much of a step. They either need to be less blocky/dramatic or continued to the edge of the quarter or both...

Just a suggestion, the top edge needs to be narrower or have a rounded contour to it, it looks too flat and wide on the top to me...

Just a side note, the painted $114 dollar blow molded spoiler I got for my Camaro was made in the USA not China.
Fiberglass does cost more to make, and is heaver and tougher, but in the cost to benefit real world sales ABS blow molding is going to be hard to beat. I have had a blow molded spoiler on my HHR for 2 1/2 years and it still looks as good as the day it was put on...

I am glad there are people like you out there that are trying new designs. you deserve a resounding thanks for your efforts.

Any clue on where they get it done? I'd love to look into blow molding in the US...

Doc - I think your idea of trimming the top would probably work but I'm not sure it would necessarily improve the look (they'd both look good). I think your suggestion of making the back so concave would be a mistake - the spoiler hangs over the back edge only because this is the first piece out of the mold (if that's what your problem with it was); the intention is to fix that by moving the bolts. As for how thick it is, this car has a much bigger butt than the first gens and this spoiler embraces that perfect design. Some of those daintier spoilers may be ok but don't quite match the rest of the car. Remember, the first gen was much leaner.

I think the spoiler looks great as is (I mean once the fit is worked out). As for tweaking the design, stopping at the deck lid matches the stock spoiler and works for this car, IMHO. I always wanted my replacement spoiler to extend over the quarter panels after seeing the Dale Jr. dovetail (which I loved); this also went for the other spoilers I was interested in: SLP's and NLP's. I think it would also look great if extended over the quarter panels but I'd need to see a photoshop to be sure. Calling all choppers out there.

I understand where you're coming from on the price. You want to stay competitive but aren't running a charity for Camaro owners. I personally would pay that price since it's better to pay a little more for something you love than to save a couple hundred $$ and regret it after a couple months or years.

Is it possible that the cost is so much because of your location? Might it be practical to try companies outside of Cali? Anybody out there in this line of work?

Richard
